Review of the Surco ProduCTS 24x60 Hitch Cargo Carrier on a 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche


Today on our 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche, we're going to do a test fit on the 24 by 60 Surco cargo carrier. This has been designed for use in 2 inch hitches. It offers a 500 pound weight capacity. The part number on it is 52018. To begin our test fit, we want to slide the shank of the carrier into the receiver tube of our hitch. As we do this, we need to line up our pin hole with our hitch pin hole. With those in line with one another, we'll take a standard 5/8 pin.

We're going to slide that through, then we'll secure it on the other side with the clip. If you don't already have one, the pin and clip are sold separately. You can find those on our website listed as part number PC3. At its closest point to the rear of our vehicle, our carrier is going to be about 2 and 1/4 inches away. Overall we've added about 28 inches to the length of the Avalanche. We have about 13 inches worth of ground clearance here at the rear.

As we open our tailgate, as you can see, it is going to come down over the top of our carrier. It's about 12 and 3/4 of an inch off the platform at its lowest point. It's going to hang over about 14 inches. Just keep that in mind if you plan on stacking items up higher than that in this front area and still require access into your tailgate area. The exhaust on our Avalanche exits over here on the passenger side. It's angled down and out, so this shouldn't have any kind of effect on heat sensitive materials that we may be transporting.

Now that we've taken a good look at the Surco cargo carrier and how it's going to work on our 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche, let's see how that very same carrier performed when we had it out on the test course. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side-to-side action. This simulates turning corners or evasively maneuvering. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or a pothole or driving over uneven pavement.

Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up and down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, parking garage, or a driveway. .
