Review of the Stromberg Carlson Hitch Cargo Carrier on a 2014 Ford Flex

Today on our 2014 Ford Flex, we're doing a test fit of the Stromberg Carlson 23 by 60 cargo carrier. It has a 500-pound weight capacity. This is designed to work with 2-inch hitches. First thing we'll do is take a few measurements here. First is going to be our ground clearance. We're going to go to the bottom of this bolt here, just under the carrier, we're going to have about 7 1/2 inches of ground clearance down there.

Overall to the back of the vehicle, we're adding about 28 1/2 inches. Our closest point is going to be about 5 1/4 inches. Now, with the Flex, we do have dual exhaust on both sides. You want to be aware of that because it does come straight out at your carrier and you may have some problems carrying any heat sensitive materials here. We've got about 6 1/2 inches before we make contact with that exhaust but you still want to be aware of carrying anything on those two areas, on the driver's and passenger's side. Next thing we'll do is check our hatch.

It does break over pretty early but we have about 20 3/4 inches before anything that we have on our carrier will make contact with that back hatch. Now, with our 2-inch hitch here, we have a hitch pin and clip holding in our carrier. That is not included but you can find that on our website, part number PC3. It's going to complete our test fit of the Stromberg Carlson 23 by 60 cargo carrier, part number CC-100 on our 2014 Ford Flex. Let's see how it did on our test course. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us side to side action which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers.

Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or potholes or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up and down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, garage, or driveway.
