Review of the SeaSucker Roof Rack on a 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Today we have a 2014 Volkswagen Passat and we're going to be doing a test fit on the Seasucker Monkey Bar Roof Rack System, which is part number 298-XX6000.Now this roof rack system has a unique way of attaching to your roof. It doesn't use the traditional clamp system where it comes under our door frame, it doesn't even use six mounting points. It uses these vacuum cups to suction down onto your roof. Now, some people are pretty wary of this system because some people think, "How is that going to stay on the roof" Well, right here I'm going to grab a hold of it and I'm gonna start shaking and you can see that the entire car is shaking, so there's no way those are coming off. If you have a big load on top, this plastic piece right here is more likely to break than these suction cups are to be removed from the roof. It's a very easy installation process. First, we're just going to remove these caps right here. Now this is the rear bar.

The reason you can tell the difference is that the front bar is going to have two suction cups on each side, whereas the rear one just has one. So we'll remove both of these caps and I'm going to set them over here for now.Now I'm going to grab a spray bottle of water and we're just gonna get the cups a bit moist before they go on top of the roof. That's going to help improve the vacuum seal. There we go.Now after that we're just going to take it and set it on our roof. There we go.

Now I'm going to come over and grab my tape measure so we can measure our crossbar spread. There's no set number that you need. You just need to make sure that it's at least 24 inches. So center crossbar to center crossbar, that's an whole number. So we're going to go to the other side and make sure it's the same.

Got to come this way a bit. Okay, there we go.Now once we get that done, we're going to begin to activate the vacuum cups to get them to suction to the roof. So we're going to apply pressure to the top. Then we're going to begin to decompress this pump cylinder. What that's going to do is begin to suck the air out.

So as I do this it's pulling the air out. You can see the cup getting closer to the roof and we're gonna continue to do this until this orange band has disappeared into the cup.Once we do that, it's secure, we're gonna go do the other side now. So same thing, apply pressure and then pump it. There we go. Now it's secure. Now what's great is that it comes off just as easy as it goes on. So if you get to your destination and you don't have any type of lock to secure it, all you gotta do is pull up on this little tab right here, it lets air back in and then you're ready to take it off and you can just store it in your vehicle. I'll go ahead and put it back on. There we go.Now we have the round bars on our Seasucker system, so it's still going to be very useful for any type of cargo box, kayak carrier, bike rack, wherever you want to put on your roof. It's going to be able to work with those applications. Like I said, it's got a strong hold on our vehicle. Each suction cup is going to have a 210 pound pull strength rating, so that's a lot of force and it's a lot of force holding itself down onto the roof. The weight capacity for this roof rack system is 165 pounds, but you do want to make sure that you check your vehicle's owners manual to make sure that your roof can handle that weight. That's going to do it for our look at the Seasucker Monkey Bar Roof Rack System on our 2014 Volkswagen Passat.
