Review of the Kuat Hitch Bike Racks on a 2019 Volkswagen Golf

Hey everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today we're taking a look at how the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 fits on our 2019 Volkswagen Golf. So, this bike rack is great because it is pretty much the best of both worlds. It's not as pricey as the Kuat NV it has those really smooth movements and it looks really good too. So, we'll take a look at its features, but we're gonna focus on how it works with our Volkswagen Golf. So, the very first thing we're gonna take a look at is a tilt away feature.

We have this lever here, go on pull that lever and let it drop down to its hilt. And why would you tilt your bike rack away If you wanna open up your hatch. So you can see here, there's so much clearance between our hatch door and your bike. You can reach in there, grab those heavier items. So whether it's our bags, our helmets, our waters or maybe we just wanna hang out in the hatch to take out our shoes.

We can do so without having to take the bike off completely. And this is gonna be one of the very smooth movements it has when you carry or put the bike onto the bike rack. That's a very smooth movement as well. There's a front wheel mount that secures that front wheel, and there's also a rear wheel strap. So there's two things you have to deal with.

So when you wanna take the strap off. You press this lever, that disengages the strap, so that you can lift it up and out of the way. Then you go over to the front and you hold onto your bike, as you press this button, lift up on that hook, push that hook out and just like that, you are ready to hit the trails. So, I'm just gonna leave our bike over here to the side. So, that we can take a closer look at that wheel base and those cradles.

Notice those ridges on the cradle. That way you can carry your tires of different widths whether it's your thin road bike tires, or your wider tires, the maximum tire width is gonna be up to three inches. You also have a different wheel base capacity. The maximum wheel base is gonna be up to 40 inches. If you have those larger frame mountain bikes, might not be the best fit for you. You may wanna check out something like the Kuat NV, or even the GuideRail instead, if you need more wheel base. You have that front hook. We talked about that one earlier. This one also folds down to be nice and neat. Now, let's talk about how much clearances you're gonna have for this rack. It sits kind of close to the ground because you have a smaller, a lower vehicle. And it takes up a pretty compact amount of space. Meaning if you measure from the bumper to the end of the rack, it only takes up 32 inches of extra length. So if you're backing into your garage or trying to park into a really tight spot. It's good to know you don't have to worry about too much clearance. But for ground clearance, that might be something. It's 17 inches, from the end of the rack to the ground. Compare that, to your hitch receiver which sits eight and a half inches from the ground. So, there is a shank rise. So your bikes are sitting higher up off the ground. When you go up those steep inclines like those driveways or hills, it's gonna help up with that. It's still something to remember. We're gonna make this more compact and pull this lever, fold up that rack, and now you have it into storage or compact position. So, there's plenty clearance here, about four inches of clearance there. And then the length added to the back of our car is now 13 and a half inches. So, big difference compared to when this is folded down. You'll want it in this position when you're just planning on driving around town. Now, what's it like living with this rack Well, for one. Notice how you will not be able to open up your hatch. You don't have enough clearance there for that, but it does sit very compact. You're able to see your taillights. Those are visible, as is your rear view window. Now, your backup camera will be a little bit obscured because of this rack. But there's still pretty good visibility around the rack. It is very easy to install. You just tighten it down here. You have an included a lock with this bike rack. There's an included cable lock as well, not really integrated. If you're holding your bike with one hand, you can step on this lever and bring the rack down with the other. So, all that works together for a very streamlined, easy to use bike rack. It also looks very good. You can get this as the gray with orange accents like what we have here, or a metallic black or a pearl color. Whatever matches your Volkswagen better. So, this was a quick look at the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 two bike platform rack, on the 2019 Volkswagen Golf. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb, or a pothole, or driving over uneven pavement. Now, lastly, we're going over some full speed bumps and we can see here the up and down action. And this will just be like driving in and out of a parking lot, garage, or driveway. So, we can see here how the bike rack moves With our truck..
