Review of the Kuat Hitch Bike Racks on a 2017 Buick Envision

Hi, everyone. Aiden here with etrailer.com, and today we're gonna be taking a look at the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 platform-style bike rack here on our 2017 Buick Envision. Now, this style of bike rack is gonna hold the bike by the front wheel right here. Now, that means it's going to be good for our carbon frame bikes, our alternative frame bikes, and it does have a 40-pound weight capacity, so not quite good for our e-bikes. If you're maybe wanting that higher weight capacity, I'd recommend checking out the RockyMounts MonoRail. It's gonna hold the bike pretty much the exact same way and give you that higher 60-pound capacity that you might be looking for.

I do like this rack, though, because you can tilt it away with the bikes loaded. Just come to this lever right here and we can ease the rack down. It's going to give us hatch access with the bikes loaded so we can get back here, change our shoes maybe before or after our ride, or just get something out of the back if we need it, and we don't have to unload the whole bike rack. So I'll just close that up real quick here and we can lift the bike rack back into place. We will hear a nice click, letting us know that it is secured in this driving position, and now we can get the bike unloaded.

To do that, we'll start with the back wheel strap, pushing this button and undoing the ratcheting strap. And then with one hand on the bike, press in this button on the hook, push it up and out of the way, then we can just lift the bike up and off. Really simple to do that because we don't have any sort of center mast that we have to fish the bike around, so it's just really easy to load and unload. At the back wheel cradle here, we can see it does pivot to accommodate four different wheel bases, and then everything else can just fold up nice and flat. So with it like this, let's go ahead and start with our measurements.

We're gonna get our ground clearance first. At the back end here, we are working with 22 1/2 inches of ground clearance. That is a pretty good amount. I don't think we'll have to worry about any sort of contact with a steep driveway or steep hills. Just be mindful of it when it's back there.

And then for the distance added to the back, we are gonna be adding 30 inches to the back of the Envision here. That's not too bad but it is adding a fair bit of distance, so when you're in those tight parking spots or maybe looking to pull in your garage, just be mindful that it's back there. When the bikes aren't loaded, though, we can fold it upright so we can leave it on our car when we're ready to do our next ride, and it's a lot less intrusive this way. This way, we're only gonna be adding 12 inches to the back, so it's a lot more manageable, a lot more compact, and overall sits pretty well on there. It does come pretty close to the bumper. At this closest point, we've got two inches of space, but the rack is overall really solid so I'm not worried about any vehicle contact. Down at the bottom, we can see we are working with a 2-inch-by-2-inch receiver tube, and it does come with a locking hitch pin. The anti-rattle device is integrated here into the back so it's completely tool-free. Just tighten it up by hand, everything is locked up and secured. And overall, that's about it for the Sherpa. It's a pretty solid bike rack, really well built. My only thing is if you're looking for that higher weight capacity, consider checking out that RockyMounts MonoRail.
