Review of the Gear Up Hang 3 Kayak Strap Storage System

Today we'll be taking a quick look at the Gear-up Hang 3, Delux Kayak strap storage system, part number Gu44010. Now just a couple quick things about this Kayak storage system, is that the J hooks which install into the wall, are made of the heavy-duty stainless steel, and the S hooks, which attach to the J hooks, are made of a vinyl-coated, heavy-duty steel, as well, just to give you some extra strength and durability, while you're holding up your 3 Kayaks. There's a heavy-duty, nylon-woven strap, again, just to provide extra stability for your kayaks. They come with these plastic buckles, which allow you to conveniently unload and load your kayak pretty quick. Again, this is a 3-kayak capacity. Comes with a limited lifetime warrantee, and has a weight capacity of 135 pounds.

You can install this kayak storage system on a ceiling or a wall, and it can be used indoors or outdoors. Now we'll quickly go ahead and show you how to install it. The first thing we need to do is just establish where we're going to install our J hooks. When installing your J hooks, you want to make sure that your screwing the hook into a beam or a stud, or some support, that is within the wall. You can see that we have these pieces of plywood that are secure here, and the screws are actually already in the beams, so we know where they're already located. Now what you need to do is basically, measure to accommodate your widest kayak.

Then make sure that both of the J hooks are even. What I'm going to do is, there's a small crease that runs through the bottom side of this plywood. That's what I'm going to measure to on both sides, just to make sure that they both are even. I'm going to make a quick measurement here. Then I'll make the same measurement on the other side. Now that we have the locations of where we need to install our J hooks, we'll be using a 1/8 drill bit, and we'll need to drill about a 1-inch pilot hole.

Then repeat the same process for the other side. Now we'll go ahead and install our J hooks. When you're installing the J hooks, you want to make sure that you thread them all the way into the wall. You want to screw them all the way to where none of the threads are visible. Now we'll go ahead and install the straps.

Basically, we'll just take the vinyl-coated S hook, and hook it on our heavy-duty, stainless steel J hook. You want to make sure that the buckles are on the outside, facing away from the wall. This is how you're going to bring the strap around the kayak. If you had it this way, and it was twisted, the buckle would be facing a wall, and you wouldn't be able to quickly load and unload it. Turn that around, and then repeat the same process for the other side. Now that we've got our straps in place, we're ready to load up our kayaks. The first thing we need to do, and remember, when we're loading up our kayaks, is that the heaviest kayak needs to go towards the bottom. If you're only carrying two kayaks, or maybe you're using one kayak, but the other two are stored up, you want to make sure that the heaviest one is towards the bottom. What we'll do is basically, just undo our buckles. Now with our extra set of hands, we'll go ahead and lift the kayak up, place it onto the wall, bring the strap around, and hook it into the buckle. Then we can pull it tight. Go a little higher. Then we'll repeat the same process for our second kayak. Then for the third kayak, you would load underneath the second one. For today's demonstration purposes, the wall that we have here, we couldn't have gone high enough to get the bottom one in place. Just to give you a general idea of how the storage rack installs, and how you would load up your kayaks. Then we'll finish off by loading up our paddle. Now that we got our kayaks up off the floor and out of the way, that will complete today's review of the Gear-up hang 3 Delux Kayak strap storage system, part number Gu44010. .
