Review of the Extang CargoCleats Truck Bed Tie Down Anchors

Kevin: Today, we'll be taking a look at the Extang CargoCleats Truck Bed Tie-Down Anchors, part number EX1932. The Extang CargoCleats provide tie-down points along the side rails of your truck's bed. They work with ropes, bungee cords, hooks, or ratchet straps. They are easily adjustable with the use of an Allen wrench which we have included in the package. They also feature protective padding so they won't harm your truck's paint. The Extang CargoCleats offer a no-drill installation. They work great on trucks that do not have stake pockets but also on trucks that do. The CargoCleats are made from a glass-filled polymer construction and feature a 500 pound weight capacity.

They come complete with a limited life-time warranty. Let's go over some of the features of the Extang CargoCleats and show you how to install them. These come two to a package so if you're going to be securing a larger item, you might want to consider picking up another set. We're going to be securing an industrial-sized fan in the bed of this truck, so a set of two CargoCleats will work for us. Let's go ahead and get started. First, make sure that the CargoCleat is loosely put together so it will move around. Then, go ahead and clamp it to the rail of your truck bed.

You can clamp it anywhere, but for the purpose of this demonstration we'll install it in the center of the rail. Slide the back portion of the clamp up into the bed. That will enable you to clamp the unit together. Once the CargoCleat is in position, snug it up with the Allen wrench provided in your package. Then, just repeat the process on the other side. Now with your cargo loaded up, go ahead and secure it in place using the Extang CargoCleats system. There are two ways to do this.

Let's start with the rope, first. Take one end of the rope and pass it through the center of the CargoCleat. Make sure there is plenty of slack in the rope. Next, bring the end of the rope around and make an x pattern by bringing the rope up through the CargoCleat, cross over and come back up through the CargoCleat again creating a loop. Pull it down snug. It's easy to see that it's not going anywhere.

Now, bring the rope around the fan, pass it through the handle, bring it over to the other CargoCleat, and repeat the same process. The second method is much simpler. Using a cinch strap with an S hook or a ratcheting strap with an S hook, attach the hook to the center of the CargoCleat. Bring the strap down and secure it to the load and tighten it down. Repeat the process on the other side. Once the load is all strapped down, it's a good idea to block the load to prevent it from shifting. A block of wood placed snug against the load will do fine. Now, let's take our load out for a ride and see how it does. On our test course, we're going to drive through a slalom. This shows side-to-side action which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvering. Next, we'll drive over some alternating speed bumps. This shows twisting action similar to hitting curbs, potholes, road debris, or uneven pavement. Lastly, we'll drive over some solid speed bumps. This shows up and down action such as driving through a parking lot or parking garage or driving in and out of a driveway. This completes our look at the Extang CargoCleats Truck Bed Tie-Down Anchors, part number EX1932.
