Review of the Flat Lip Trailer Coupler Lock

Randy: Hey, guys. It's Randy here at Now oftentimes, we get questions about trailer security and what we feel like are the best way to keep your trailer secured. Whether it's out in your driveway just overnight. Maybe you've got it in storage and you just want to make sure it's protected. I really like this style of lock.

This is one from etrailer. So, you can see this is a slide-on coupler lock. It's designed for use on flat lip trailers. Let me get this opened up. You can see this is a nice flat lip around there.

This is going to be the perfect situation. You can see, got those narrow guides. It's going to slide in and on. Simply push up on the stud and rotate the key. At that point, you're nice and secure.

Now, they've designed these in two sizes. This is for inch and seven eighths and two-inch trailers.This one's going to be for two-inch and two and five sixteenths-inch trailers. I like that we have specific sizing like that. That helps to ensure that we have a nice snug fit. Anytime they fit on there snugly, it's going to reduce the risk anybody can get something in there, and kind of pry on it, and get leverage enough to get it off.

Also, when designing this, we made sure that the end was sealed on this one. Unlike other ones of this type, you'll notice that that's kind of open. When it's open like that, it allows you to get a pry bar in there and you can start working on that a little bit. So, really tried to make sure that we had this exactly how you're going to want it. Now, regardless of what size that you're going to need, we have it available in two colors.We have the powder coat silver here, powder coat yellow here. The yellow is a good high vis situation. This is going to help alert thieves that you do have some protection on your trailer. I would probably go with the yellow, but if you want something that looks a little bit more in line with your trailer, you don't want something standing out, the silver is a great choice as well. And regardless of the color or size you pick, corrosion's really not going to be an issue here. We've had this constructed using A380 aluminum. This is going to give you good durability, good corrosion resistance. We've got the clear zinc or the white zinc, some people call it, finish on the stud that comes up, and your lock also has zinc coating on it. It's going to be a double-sided key, so it's much more difficult to pick than what some of them are.Slides in nice and easy, operates really nice and easily. Now, I would say if you're going to have this out in the rain for extended periods of time, after years and years, I'm sure if you didn't treat the lock core with just a little bit of light oil, it might get some corrosion and get kind of hard to turn. But with a little basic service, I think you'll have this just about as long as you'll have your trailer. Now, the way it works is once we slide this on our coupler, you can see the pin here in the middle. That just comes up and it keeps that from being pulled or moved off. At that point, we turn our lock and everything's secured. We can pull out our key at that point, which it is going to come with too.When we're ready to take it off, simply place our key in. And you'll watch as I turn it, the tab's going to automatically drop down. So, this is a really quick and really easy way to get your trailer secure. And now as far as picking the right size for you, there's kind of a guide that we can use. Basically, if you're into smaller boats, smaller utility trailers, or even some of the older pop-up campers, those would have inch and seven eighths or two-inch, which two-inch is more typical. You'll want to go with the inch and seven eighths or the two-inch version. When going with larger trailers, let's say, small, medium, heavy duty utility trailers, enclosed trailers, some of your larger boats, as long as they don't have breaks, most of those have a surge coupler, which this won't work on, I'd go with the larger size.I'd go with that two and two and five sixteenth-inch size, just so you can ensure that if you do change trailers or change couplers that it's still going to work. You're not going to ask to purchase something different. And we've got a few different couplers available out here, so we're going to take a walk through the different ones and give you an idea of how it's going to fit. The one we've been looking at here that's installed on the trailer is the inch and seven eighths and two-inch version on a two-inch couplers. So, let's take a look at the play and the movement you might expect. You can see we have a little bit of side to side there, a little bit of front to back, but overall, I think it's pretty secure and I think it's going to be a great deterrent.Now, here's the two and five sixteenths-inch installed on a two-inch coupler. You can see a little bit more movement there. I'm not worried about it falling off or coming off, anything like that. And you're still not going to have very much room in there to get any kind of prying action and get it off. So, an idea there of what you can expect on that. And of course, when we go over to the two and five sixteenths-inch, that's going to be a little bit tighter. So, let's head over there now and check that out. All right, now here on the larger coupler, you can see it's much more similar than what we see out of that inch and seven eights and two-inch on the two-inch. Less movement side to side, a little bit of rotation there, and a little bit of front to back.So, with a two and five sixteenths, you definitely want to go with the two and five sixteenths. If you're not going to use a two and five sixteenths-inch coupler, I think I'd go with the inch and seven eights or the two-inch for the two-inch application. It's just a little bit more snug. Now, this is probably one of the most common couplers you're going to find out there. Just made to bolt onto a square tube. We see these all the time and in this case, it's actually a little bit more snug with two inches here. Fits on there really well. No forward or back play, so I really liked the way that one fits. I think it'll do a great job. Let's switch this out and put the two and five sixteenths on and see how it works.Again, on a two-inch, that two and five sixteenths definitely has a little bit of side to side play, front to back. On this style coupler, I'd go with that two-inch too. The only time I think I'd go with that two and five sixteenths is if I had a two and five sixteenths-inch coupler. I'd want that and I think it'll work out really well. Now, depending on the area you live in and if trailer thefts are common or not common, you might want to think about doubling or tripling up on your protection. It's a very common practice, especially in long-term storage. You can get pin locks that will go through your coupler and prevent that from being used as well, just like this. But that gives a nother level that they'll have to bypass. We also have an etrailer wheel lock to where you can clamp it on both sides of your wheel.It's got a nice shaft that sticks out of the front of it. Prevents that wheel from turning. The good news is these can all be keyed alike. So you get this, you get that pin, you get that wheel lock. You only have to use one key. You're not going to be fumbling through and trying to figure out which key is which. So, if you do need some additional protection or you want some extra security to protect your investment, I think those are all good solutions for the same problem. And like we talked about, this works on a flat lip coupler. The definition of that is just what we saw. Has that nice flat lift around the front. This would be considered a rolled lip coupler. You can see here with that rolled lip coupler, that gap's not large enough to fit in. Now, that means this is going to fit nice and snug as we saw on the flat lip, but it won't work in this application.So, if you've got this style, we've got a really nice lock from Master Lock that you could put on here and it'll work. Now, I would pick this one if I could, but if I didn't have the application or if I had a rolled lip, I think that other one's a pretty good option as well. It also has another benefit, and the only other situation where I might recommend that one over this one would be if you have multiple sized balls. If you have an inch and seven eights, two and two and five sixteenths, maybe you got three different trailers. People have it. If you had those three, that one's going to work for all three sizes. You won't have to buy separate ones, but one lock's only going to lock one trailer, so it's not like you can use that to secure all of them at the same time anyway. So, keep that in mind. Those are probably the only two situations I might consider that other one. But overall, this is going to be an excellent way to keep your trailer nice and secure.
