Review of the etrailer Hitch Pin Alignment Collar

What's up everybody It's AJ with Today, we're gonna be looking at the etrailer hitch alignment tool. Now that's gonna be something that's really useful for you. You might not think you need it yet, but if you get your first cargo carrier or bike rack, anything heavy or cumbersome, you're gonna go put it in your hitch, it's hard to line up the hitch pin hole sometimes. Sometimes you go too far or just not enough. It's different every single time.

And as you do it more, it's gonna get more frustrating. This is gonna end that. You put that on the shank of your accessory. This is gonna hit the front of your hitch, and align that hitch pin hole on the first try every single time. It's really awesome.

Let's check it out. Let's start with this heavy duty ball mount. I'm gonna show you how easy it is to actually install this. Just goes over the shank. Once you loosen these up, just let that plate move a little bit more.

That way you can slide it right there on the shank, leave it loose, and now we're gonna put our ball mount in our hitch and see where it lines up. We've got our heavy duty ball mount set up. Just gonna lift this up, get it installed in our hitch. Line up that hole. You just saw I already went too far.

I think that's lined up there. Let's make sure. All right, so the hitch pin is in there. With it in place, knowing this is where it needs to be, now I can attach this collar. I'm just gonna take these knobs and starting to tighten it down. I'm gonna hold it in place with the other hand. That way it doesn't shift on me. And just tighten both sides nice and tight. On both sides. Just like that. And now, should be able to pull the hitch pin, remove the ball mount, and this time just go in. Gonna hit that collar, and it's aligned. There you go. And on the first try, we got it lined up and we didn't even have to look over at it. It really is that easy to get set up and use. And as you kind of saw, there was some difficulty. I kept missing to get it lined up right. But with that collar now, it's in place, it's tightened down, I'm never gonna have to do that again. And now, with the ball mount, I just throw it in there, line up, and be on my way. Now let's see how helpful it is on some other accessories. Back inside the garage, this is gonna be another example. This is a cargo carrier. This one's heavier than normal cargo carriers. It's got the handles here in the middle, but you know, a cargo carrier can be more rectangle shape, kind of bulky to pick up and put on your hitch. I'm just gonna show you this is without the hitch aligner. So I can't really see the hitch pin hole from here. I kinda have to guess. So I'm gonna put more of that in there just to make sure it's in there when I let go, but not even close to the hole. So now I have to kind of look to the side. You almost just need a spotter to help you out. Line that up and come back a little bit more. That looks about right there. So that's how much it was without the hitch aligner. I'm gonna pull it back out, put the hitch aligner on there and show you how much easier that's gonna be. Now with the hitch aligner, just go and slide it in, bumps up against there, and it should be lined up just fine. Goes right in. I didn't have to look. Even with the lighter etrailer aluminum carrier. This one's awesome. I really like it. It's easy to pick up and move around, but even because it's light, you can easily miss the hitch pin hole as well. You can go too far in too easily, and still have to look over to the side. You can't get a good view on it. You kinda gotta come down here and see, and adjust that way. Now with the hitch aligner on there, I don't have to worry about it as much. It hits up against there. Lined up and good to go. This is gonna be an example of a bulky platform style bike rack. It's a little different than the other ones. You can see there's not exactly a place to put your hands where it pulls it all in on itself. You kind of have to find two good placements, lift it up and slide in the hitch. And then with all that going on, it's gonna be hard to line up that hole. I've probably already gone by it, but because of all this bulkiness on the backside, I can't even see the holes. I'm gonna have to stop, look to the side, and see if it's lined up. Looks like I didn't go too far yet. It's gotta go in a little bit more. That looks good there. But, look at all that time that took. With the hitch aligner, it should be one shot. Now, we'll slide it on there. This time it should be way easier. Now I know it's in the place just by feel. We'll come down, and now our pin. Now, this is a weight distribution head. This is pretty heavy. So this is another application to where that hitch aligner collar is gonna help you out. We even have the hitch grip here to help lift it. Cause it's not only heavy, but kind of awkward just because of the extended part here. Makes it hard to lift sometimes. But even with this, when you go to put it in, I have to look to the side. Once again, I've already missed it. Gotta go a little more forward. I went too far. Come back. So I'm already proving my point here. Is that this isn't easy to line up without that collar. Let's see if it fixes it. Let's try it again with the hitch aligner. Just gonna go all the way up there. Just like that. First try. Something we did learn with different weight distributions, is this is just gonna be the shank that goes on when we didn't put the head on here. But what I want to point out was the gussets. You can see, they have this raised parts here and this bar down here on the side. That's gonna kind of interrupt using the hitch alignment, and you're gonna need. It looks like we only have half an inch of space here, and you need at least over an inch and a half of space for this to fit. I can show you it sits just on top. No problem. But underneath, it's gonna bump into that. And the collar is gonna hit the hitch and not line up that hole properly. So on something like this, make sure if you wanted to use it on your weight distribution, make sure you don't have the gussets in the way. That way, you can use it. Another thing to note we learned, is if you are doing something heavy like this, like a heavy ball mount or weight distribution, lightly put it in the hitch. Don't slam it in there 'cause that will move this. No matter how hand tight you get it. If you throw it in there with that heavy weight, it's gonna push it a little bit. So really, you can use it as a visualizer too. You just see how close you need to get. Just lightly put in the hitch. You see I didn't slam the ball mount in there or anything at full force. Just lightly put it in there, and then just let it bump up against that You know it's gonna line up on the first try. Despite those last few things though, overall, this thing is gonna be really helpful. The steel construction, it's gonna last a long time so you don't have to worry about taking it off. Whatever accessory you put on, you just leave it on there. Or get one for each one of your accessories. That way you don't swap it back and forth. And you could always just get it done in one shot. I really liked that part of it. We use it here in the shop all the time on other accessories. I think it's gonna help you out a lot. Thanks for hanging out, and I hope this helped..
