Review of the Detail K2 20x60 Hitch Cargo Carrier on a 2012 Ford Flex

Today on our 2012 Ford Flex we've got the Detail K2 Folding Cargo Carrier that we're test fitting. This is a 20x60 by carrier that's been designed for use in 2" hitches, and it has a 500-pound weight capacity. The part number on it is K2HCC602. Like a lot of carriers, we're going to have that expanded, steel mesh floor here on the bottom, let's all that dirt, debris, water, moisture, stuff like that fall down and out. It's going to give us a nice platform for all of our goods and stuff to ride on. We've got about 5-1/2" worth of ground clearance on our rail that's going to run all the way around that gives us good front-to-back and side-to-side load stability and also offers quite a few connection points around here for our bungees or straps or whatever we plan on securing our load with. You'll notice little movement and a little play in the carrier.

It's secured using a hitch pin and clip, and like all of them, we've all seen them going down the road, you're just going to have that. If you'd like to get rid of that, we've got some anti-rattle devices available on our website; pick one of those up, put it in, and you should alleviate any of that movement. We've got about 11-3/4" worth of ground clearance here at the rear. Overall, we've added about 33-3/4" to the rear of our vehicle. At its closest point where it would make contact if slid all the way in, we've got about 13" of space there. You can see the Flex right down here, it's got a duel outlet, one-sided exhaust set.

It's located about 15-1/2" from the front of the carrier, so just use caution if you plan on transporting heat-sensitive materials over here on the driver side. Let's check out hatch clearance. Looks like it is going to break over the plane of the carrier, but it happens pretty high. Let's figure out where that is. Looks like that's going to be right at about 25", so if in that small area there you're going to be stacking times up higher than that, you might run into a little bit of interference. Another nice thing about the K2 is its ability to store.

What we'll do is pull the pin and clip located here in that middle section, lift up on the rear of the carrier, move it to its stored position, and then slide our pin and clip back in. Now we're going to reduce the amount of length that we've added to the rear of the vehicle to about 10-1/2" so pretty nice and compact. Our closest point of contact is going to be out here on the outside edge; that's now about 6-3/4", and we've got about 9-3/4" worth of ground clearance. Now that we've been able to take a good look at the Detail K2 Folding Cargo Carrier, and we've seen how it fits our 2012 Ford Flex, let's take a look and see how that carrier performed when they had it out on the test course. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom; this is going to show us the side-to-side action; this simulates turning corners or evasively maneuvering. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action; this will simulate hitting a curb or a pothole or driving over uneven pavement.

Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up-and-down action; this will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, parking garage, or driveway.
