Review of the Carpod Hitch Cargo Carrier on a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we are doing a test fit of a Carpod, walled, cargo carrier. It is 23 by 47 inches, and is designed to work with two inch hitches. The weight capacity on this is 450 pounds. The first thing we are going to do is take a few measurements. Our ground clearance is going to be about 18 inches. That's because on the back here we have got that nice raised shank. That is going to lift the cargo carrier even higher than your hitch.

Overall to the vehicle, we are adding about 35 inches there, and our closest point is going to be our raised shank down here, and that is about five inches away here. Now, with our Jeep Grand Cherokee, we have got dual exhaust on the vehicle, and they come just about straight out and level with our carrier. Just to be cautious, we have got about 14 and a half inches between the two. If you are planning on carrying any heat sensitive materials, I would avoid this area and the same area on the driver's side. Now one of the features is that we can fold down our walls here. To do so we are just going to pull out our pins, we will fold down the smaller side. We will pull out the pins on this side, and fold that down as well.

You can take the pins and just set them off to the side in your glove box, or anywhere that you won't lose them. I like to take the included strap here, and feed it through, just so that it rests there, and we will fold down our larger sides. That way we can easily get to our strap, and pull that out. Which we can then use to strap down our sides, to keep them from flying up and hitting our vehicle, or damaging anything. With that down we do have access to our back hatch area here, and there is enough room that you can stand between the carrier, and your vehicle to get out larger items.

With our walls up, we won't be able to access our back hatch area, but with them down, as you can see, we are able to do so. This carrier does have another position, it's more of a stow position. To do so, we are just going to come over here, and pull out our pinning clip. We will come to the back and lift straight up on the carrier. That's the nice thing about the strap, is that it holds those walls into place. We will replace that pin and clip, and we can take a few more measurements.

Our ground clearance is now about 13 and three quarter inches. Overall, we are only adding about 11 inches to the vehicle now, and our closest point is still about five inches away to our carrier. With this carrier, we have got a hitch pin and clip holding that in. That is not included, but you can find that on our website, the part number is PC3. We also have some anti-rattle options on our website as well. That is going to be our completed look, at the Carpod walled cargo carrier. Part number M2205, on our 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Let's see how it does on the test course. Here on the test course, we will start by going through a stall. This is going to show us the side to side action, which simulates turning corners, or evasive maneuvers. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we will see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or pothole, or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we will see the up and down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, garage or driveway.
