Review of the Carpod Hitch Cargo Carrier on a 2014 Ford Flex

Today on our 2014 Ford Flex, we're doing a test fit of the Carpod 23 by 47 walled cargo carrier, part number M2205. This is designed to work with 2 inch hitches and has a capacity to hold up to 450 pounds. The first thing we're going to do is take a few measurements here. Our ground clearance will be first. To the bottom of the carrier, we have about 15 inches. It's because we've got that nice raised shank in the back, so it's going to lift that carrier up.

Overall to the back of the vehicle, we're adding about 35 inches there. Our closest point is going to be about 6-1/2 inches away. Now we do have a dual exhaust on this vehicle, so just be aware of that if you're planning on carrying any heat-sensitive materials in your cargo carrier. We've got about 12-1/2 inches of distance between the 2. Now a great feature of this cargo carrier is that you can fold down the walls. To do so, we're just going to release the strap here.

Set that off to the side. We're going to pull out the 4 pins that we have on each corner. Simply lift up, and then we'll lay this wall down. Now with those walls out of the way, we can take our strap and feed it underneath our other walls, and then fold those down. Then we'll take our strap and tighten it down over our walls.

This strap's going to keep those walls from coming up while you're driving down the road. Now with those in place, we can reach into our back hatch and get anything in or out that we may need. We'll close that up. Now this is a folding cargo carrier. To fold it up, we'll just remove this pin and clip here, come to the back of the carrier, and lift it straight up. We'll replace that pin and clip.

Now a few of our measurements have changed, so we'll go ahead and take those again. We've got about 11-1/2 inches of ground clearance. We're adding about 10-1/2 inches to the back of the vehicle. Our closest point now is about 6 inches away from the vehicle. Now with this cargo carrier, we do have a hitch pin and clip holding that in, and this pin and clip is not included, but you can pick that up on our website along with some anti-rattle devices. That part number is PC3. That's going to complete our look at the Carpod 23 by 47 walled cargo carrier and how it fits on our 2014 Ford Flex. Let's see how it does on the test course. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curve or pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up and down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, garage, or driveway.
