How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2014 Subaru Forester

Today in our 2014 Subaru Forester we will be installing the Curt custom fit vehicle wiring harness with four pole flat connector, part number C56040. To begin our install we will first open up the rear hatch and then remove the center cargo cover. Next we will go ahead and remove the center tray section. On the driver's side we can remove the corner carpeting and then the corner tray section. To remove the corner tray we'll need to remove the two push pin fasteners first. Next we'll remove the carpeting here on the passenger side, then the passenger side cargo tray. To remove it, we'll need to remove the two push pin fasteners that secure it. Next we will remove the threshold.

To remove the threshold, we'll just gently pry it up, releasing the fasteners underneath. Next we'll remove the cargo hook here on the driver's side, then the screw at the upper cargo hook. Now we'll gently pull out on the quarter panel releasing the fasteners underneath. Here with blue tape we can see that the pigtail is taped off to the manufacturer's harness. We can remove the blue tape and then take our new wiring harness and plug directly into the manufacturer's port. Next we'll take the white wire with the preattached ring terminal and secure it to the body or sheet metal of the vehicle.

Note: I do recommend to find a location where the sheet metal doubles up for more secure ground. Using the self tapping screws supplied with our install kit we can go ahead and secure the ring terminal now. Now that the ground is secure we can go ahead and install the 10-amp fuse supplied with the install kit into the inline fuse holder. Next we'll need to mount the converter box. We'll use the two way adhesive supplied in our install kit to secure our converter box to the vehicle. Take one side of the adhesive off and adhere it to the converter and the other side so that we can adhere it to the vehicle.

When adhering it to the vehicle, we are looking for a clean flat surface preferably sheet metal to mount our converter box to. Here behind the quarter panel, below the tail light assembly is a clean flat surface that we can use. Take our four pole and run it out towards the spare tire well and then we can reinstall the quarter panel. Alright now with everything reinstalled, lets go ahead and show you how to use your new four pole connector. We'll simply open up the rear cargo cover, take our four pole harness out, run it out over the threshold but stay from the latch because pinching off in the latch can harm the wire. The weather striping is thick enough that it won't and we can simply close the rear hatch on the wire. Pull out what we need and we'll run it down to our hitch or accessory.

Then once we're finished with our four pole harness, we'll simply open up the hatch and take the four pole harness and store it down here in the rear cargo compartment. Now with everything installed, let's go ahead and test our new four pole harness. To test it we're going to use our test light by taking our ground clamp and putting it on the white wire terminal. Then the brown wire terminal will indicate our running light circuit, the yellow wire terminal will be the driver's side turn signal and brake and the green wire terminal is the passenger side turn signal and brake. Now we know our four pole harness works, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of our Curt custom fit vehicle wiring harness with four pole flat connector, part number C56040 on our 2014 Subaru Forester. .
