How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon

Today on our 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon, we'll be installing the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. Part number, C56040. Now to begin with we'll need to raise the rear hatch of our vehicle. We're going to then need to remove a few interior pieces in order to gain access to the factory plug. To gain access to this we'll need to remove the center cover piece by simply lifting the handle, lifting up, and pulling outward. The two tabs at the front will slide out and go ahead and set that aside. Next, we'll go ahead, we'll need to remove the center tray or storage tray that's located just below the carpeted cover.

We'll go ahead and set this aside too. There's also a carpeted piece over here on the driver's side, just go ahead and slide your finger underneath the edge and gently pull up, and the two tabs will release. Now for the foam structure underneath this, there's two tabs that we'll need to remove, to do this we're going to use a trim panel removal tool, and slide it up underneath and gently pry upward and the tabs will release. A large flathead screwdriver will work just as well. Be careful when removing them, not to damage the foam structure.

We're then going to need to peel the carpet back just a little bit. It's in a track here, so if you just get it started it'll simply slide out of the track. Once we have the carpet released, next there'll be three tabs that we'll need to remove to remove this foam structure here. Now with the three tabs removed we can go ahead and set this piece aside as well. The factory plug is located on the driver's side about three-quarters of the way towards the front of the wheel well. It's actually tucked up underneath the carpeting here on the side.

The plug is actually a white plug and it will not pull all the way out from underneath the carpet, so you will need to take your other hand and gently pull down as you're putting the plug into place. We'll go ahead and take the white plug that comes on our Curt T-Connector, and we'll make sure we plug it firmly into place so that we hear the locking tab click. Once we have the plug secure, next we'll need to use our self-tapping screw that comes with the kit and we'll need to ground our white wire with the ring terminal. We'll go ahead and ground it here, just underneath the carpet. Now that we have our ground wire connected using the self-tapping screw and the ring terminal connected to the white wire, next we're going to go ahead and install our 10 amp fuse into the fuse holder. Now we'll go ahead and use our test light, we'll connect the ground from the test light to the open prong on the 4-Flat, and we'll go ahead and run through our light functions.

With the running lights on, we'll touch the brown wire, we should get a constant light or a beep. Now for the left turn we'll touch the yellow wire, we'll get an intermittent beep or a flash. For the right turn or the passenger side turn, we'll touch the green wire. Now for the brake function we'll touch the yellow and the green, and with both wires there should be constant light or a beep. As you can see here, all of our functions are working just fine. Now that we've tested our 4-Flat, now we're ready to pick a location to mount our box. We'll be using the two-sided tape that comes with the kit to secure our box to the inner fender. We'll peel the one side of the tape off and push it onto the back side of the box, and then we'll peel the other side off so it'll secure it to the inside of the fender, just up here underneath the carpet. You'll also want to take the wires and tuck them up underneath the edge of the carpet. Now that we have all of our wires secured, as well as the converter box mounted, now we're ready to install our interior in the reverse order that we removed it. We'll put the cross piece of foam with the three push-pin fasteners back in place, we'll then put the carpeting back into the track. We can then go ahead and put the piece of inner foam here on the driver's side. Again, we'll need to add our two fasteners to hold this in place as well. The 4-Flat does come with a cover that simply slides over the end and will keep dirt and debris out of the end of the 4-Flat. Now for storing the 4-Flat, you can store it either underneath the driver's side small panel that you have to lift up and remove the tabs each time, or you can simply store it in the center tray underneath the cover. Once we have that done, we'll go ahead and set the center tray section back in. Then we can put the cover back on top of that, simply by putting the two tabs back in place and setting the cover back down. Now to use your 4-Flat you simply lift the cover, pull your 4-Flat out, making sure that when you close the rear hatch you stay away from the center latch as this can damage the wire. The weather-stripping around the rear hatch will push in enough to allow the 4-Flat to run between the weather-strip and the rear hatch and not damage the wire. Now when not using you 4-Flat, you simply raise the hatch, lift the cover on the tray, and stow the 4-Flat wiring in foam tray underneath the carpeted cover. With that, that'll conclude our installation of the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. Part number, C56040, on our 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon. .
