How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2011 Subaru Forester

Today on our 2011 Subaru Forster, we'll be installing the Curt T Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number C56040. Now to begin our install, we'll first go ahead and open up the rear hatch. Then we'll take the spare tire cover from the rear storage compartment and set it aside. Next we'll remove the center storage compartment, which will just lift up and remove. Remove the carpeting panel here on the drivers side, and then the storage compartment on the drivers side. The storage compartment on the drivers side has two push pin fasteners that will secure it in position. To remove them, we use a flat bladed screw driver or an interior trim panel tool to pop each fastener off.

Then we can pull out the driver side storage compartment and set it aside. Once it's removed, you can see the manufacturers tow port here, it has the blue tape that secures the white connector to the manufacturers harness. Now go ahead and cut the blue tape first, and then we can bring in our new T connector vehicle wiring harness. The white connector of our Curt T Connector Wiring Harness will match up with the manufacturers tow port when plugged directly into it. Then we'll take the white wire with the pre-attached ring terminal, which will be the ground for the new converter box, and attach to the body sheet metal. Or in this case we can go directly to the frame.

We'll use a self-tapping screw to secure it. Now with the plug connected and our ground made, we'll go ahead and install the red 10 amp fuse into the inline fuse holder. We'll go ahead and apply a two way adhesive to the back of the converter box. Remove one side of the adhesive attach it to the converter box. Remove the other side and route the converter box behind the paneling here on the drivers side, and attach it to a clean flat service, preferably sheet metal. Now with our converter box installed we'll go ahead and route the 4-pole connector towards the rear of the vehicle where it will store in the center storage compartment. Using a couple black zip ties we'll secure our wiring as necessary.

Cut off the excess from the zip ties, and then we can reinstall the interior trim components. Now with everything reinstalled, let's go ahead and show you how to test the new 4-pole connector. Using a test light, put a ground clamp on the white wire terminal. Next terminal will be the brown wire terminal for our ruining light circuit. The yellow wire terminal for the driver side turning signal and break.

The green wire terminal for the passenger side turn signal and break. Now that we know that all of our connectors work, let's go ahead and show you how to use it. We'll simply take our 4-pole connector, run it out over the threshold and outside the hatch, being careful to stay away from the latch on the hatch as pinching it in there can harm the wire. However, if the weather stripping is thick enough, then we simply close the hatch on it, and then pull out the necessary wire to run to our hitch accessory. Then once we're done, we simply roll it up and store it in the spare tire compartment. There you have it the Curt T Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part number C56040 on our 2011 Subaru Forster. .
