How to Install a Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness on a 2019 Subari Forester

Today on our 2019 Subaru Forester, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install Tekonsha T-1 vehicle wiring harness, 4-pole flat trailer connector. This is what our wiring is going to look like when it's installed. This is going to give us all our proper lighting functions to safely tow our trailer. Both turn signals, our brake lights, and our running lights. This wiring is meant to live inside the vehicle. However, our customer wanted it routed outside the vehicle.

It is going to come with a nice dust cap to help protect our connections from any dirt and debris. When not in use, it can double as holder to keep it from dragging the ground. Hook it right onto your safety chain rings on your hitch. Now this wiring is going to be compatible with five, six, and seven pole adapters. It's going to give you 2.1 amps per circuit for your stop and turn signals, and 5.6 amps per circuit for your taillights. Another nice thing that I want to mention about the Tekonsha wiring harness, it's going to have a convertor box.

What that convertor box does, it protects your factory wiring on your vehicle from any back feed from the trailer, if the trailer has a wiring issue. The nice thing that Tekonsha does is in that convertor box, they fill the whole thing with potting material, so it really holds all those connections good, and it prevents them from coming loose if there is any vibration in that box.Now that we've gone over some of the features, let me show you how to get it installed. First thing we need to do is we need to remove all of our floor coverings from the back of the vehicle. Take out this center foam piece. A tool makes this a little bit easier.

If you have a large screwdriver it will work also. We'll just pop these fasteners out. Pull this out and set it aside.Next thing we need to do is locate our factory plug that we're going to be plugging in our wiring harness into. The directions are going to tell us it's behind this panel. But on the '19, it's actually right down under hear, so we're not going to have to remove any of this.

We can pull our plug out. We're going to take our wiring harness. We're just going to plug it directly into it, just like that. Now typically this wiring harness is made to live inside the vehicle, which means once you tested it and make sure everything it going okay, you mount your convertor box. Then put your panels back in and you can store it inside the car, just pull it out when you need it.Our customer is wanting it routed outside the vehicle. There's two rubber plugs right underneath our spare tire, so what we're going to do is pull out our spare tire. You'll notice two plugs here. We're going to be using this one here. You'll notice it comes out right above our hitch. Now because our customer wants this routed outside, what we're going to have to do is we're going to have to slit this to run our wire through it. Then we'll seal it back up, so let's do that first. Get our 4-pole wire outside. Go ahead and pass this through, out to our hitch. We can just take a utility knife or you can take some cutters like this, and we're just going to cut it right to the center. We can reinstall our plug. Now it's a good idea to take some RTV Silicone. If you don't have any, you can find it here at etrailer.com. This does not come in your kit. It's a good idea to take this and kind of cover where you cut that to help keep any fumes, any moisture or anything like that from getting in through that crack. Now let's test out our wiring using part number I26. Brake lights, left turn, right turn, running lights. Now that we know everything is working correctly, we can reinstall our spare tire and all of our interior panels. This is what our wiring is going to look like with our brackets mounted onto our hitch. Our customer chose this short bracket, which is part number 118140, and then our 4-pole bracket, which is part number 118144. That can be found here at etrailer.com. That will do it for a look at and installation on the Tekonsha T-1 vehicle wiring harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector on our 2019 Subaru Forester.
