How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2018 Subaru Forester


Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Subaru Forester, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 118467.Here's what our wirings are going to look like once we have it installed. It is going to give us a four-pole flat trailer connector, and it is going to stay on the inside of the car at all times. Now, it is going to have an included dust cap that is permanently attached, and it's going to provide us all the lights required by law to get down the road when we're towing our trailer, such as our tail lights, turn signals, and even our brake lights.Now, when we're not towing, and we're not using our wiring, we can simply open up our hatch, and our wiring is actually going to store right in this compartment right underneath our floor covering. The nice part about having the wiring on the inside is that we're not going to have to worry about any of the elements getting to our wires or corroding our connection points.Now, our wiring is a custom wiring kit, so we're not going to have to cut or splice into any wires on our Forester. We're just going to have one panel that we're going to have to remove right here and there's going to be a plug back here that our harness is going to plug directly into. Now, our wiring kit does come wiring everything needed to get it installed, including the converter box to take our signal from our car and send it out to our trailer, as well as an included fuse and fuse holder to protect our vehicle, and the wiring from any kind of back feeding or any other kind of issues that may arise.Now that we've seen the end result of our wiring and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed.

To begin our installation, we're going to open up our rear hatch, and we're going to be removing all the floor coverings that are in here and setting them aside. Now if we move over to the left-hand side, we're going to have this panel right here. We are going to have to remove both of these to get access, so we can take the trays out as well. Take the center tray out. We are not going to have to remove our spare tire, however, though.

In order to take out this foam tray, we are going to have to pull up these two push pin fasteners. We can take a trim panel tool and just want to get underneath it and pop it out. Then we're going to remove the foam tray and set it aside.Now we're going to have to pull out the rear threshold here, and we're just going to want to come underneath, grabbing the plastic, and pull up and it's going to release the tabs. You're just going to want to work your way from each end and work towards the center. Then we can set this aside.

Now, our connector's going to be back in this area, so we're going to remove our tie-down hook so we don't damage it. If you take a trim panel tool or a flathead screwdriver, you can just pop that little cover out and then it'll expose the nut that's holding it in place.Now, we're using a 10-millimeter socket to pull it out. We can set this aside for right now. Then we can grab our plastic panel down towards the bottom and we're going to be pulling away to unlock some of the plastic tabs that are holding it in place, so then we can gain access to the plug, which is going to be right back here. It's going to have some blue tape around it.

That's the one we're going to be looking for, right here.You'll notice that the end of the connector on our harness here, it's going to match the connector on our vehicle. We can go ahead and plug it in. Make sure it locks into position, and they already have the fuse pre-installed on the harness, so we're not going to have to worry about that. We're going to go ahead and secure our box and you can use double-sided tape or zip-ties. You just want to make sure that it's nice and secure. I'm actually going to take a zip-tie and I'm going to go through my converter box, and I'm going to zip-tie it to this existing wiring right here, that way it's nice and out of the way and I don't have to worry about it interfering with anything.I'm going to actually just push the converter box to the backside of the wiring, so we know we're going to clear all the panels. Just kind of push it back a little bit and tighten up our zip-tie, then we can cut the excess off. You just want to make sure that all your wires and the converter box itself are going to be tucked out of the way and we can take our four-pole wiring and we're going to route it underneath this cover here. Then we can put this panel back.You want to make sure the gasket is on the right side of the panel, then we can start putting all the panels back in our trunk. You can start by putting the threshold back in place. Now, when we put this side panel back in, you're going to want to make sure that your four-pole wiring is still accessible and that you can route it underneath that panel towards the center by the spare tire, then we can put those push pins back in.Now we can put our toe hook back in place and we can put our cargo hook back in place and before I put the center panel in, I'm going to move my four-pole so that I can actually go around the panel, so when it does sit in there, I can keep it right here, ready for me in this compartment. Put our floor covering back, and finally, the rear mat. Whenever we do want to use our wiring, we can simply lift up the cover to get access to it and it'll be right here at the back whenever we're ready to use it. Now the nice this is, is we can just drop it down by our hitch and so long as we stay away from the actual latch itself, the seal here will have enough give to when we close our hatch, it won't damage the wire.Now all we have left to do is to go ahead and test our wires to make sure all of our circuits are working properly. I'm going to plug in my four-pole tester and if you need one of these, you can pick one up on our website using part number I26. I'm also going to grab an extra set of hands so they can run my lights and I can verify that they're all working properly.Can I get the headlights, please Looks good. Left turn signal Good. Right turn signal The brakes Now, if you would, the brakes and both turn signals, please. All right. Everything's looking good, so we can hook up to our trailer and hit the road.
