How to Install the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness on a 2017 Subaru Forester

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Subaru Forester we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with four-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, that's gonna be part number HM11143865.Here's what our wiring looks like once we have it installed. Now opposed to a lot of the others this one is gonna stay on the outside and it is gonna provide us a four-pole flat trailer connector. It's gonna have a nice dust cap to keep all the dirt and debris out and Hopkins went the extra mile here and to this thing on the outside they added this nice coating to go over the wires to help protect them a little bit. Now it's gonna provide us all of our signals, such as our taillights, turn signals, and brakes to get down the road safely when we're towing our trailer. Now that we've see what it looks like let's go ahead and show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation we're gonna open up our rear hatch and we're gonna need to remove all the floor panels. We're gonna pull this bottom panel out and set it aside as well as the two side panels over here.

Pull out the foam center section and we're gonna remove the spare tools as well as the spare tire. Now this panel over here on the drivers side we're gonna have two plastic push pins holding it in place. I'm gonna take a trim panel tool, I'm gonna pop those clips out. Now if you come underneath the panel instead of going on top we can pop those clips out without damaging the foam. Then we're gonna pull that out and set it aside.Over here on the drivers side side panel we're gonna have our tie down hook and another one up top here. Now the one on the bottom we're gonna take the hook and we're gonna lower it down.

We can take a flathead screwdriver or that trim panel tool and we're gonna pop out that center section, we'll expose the fastener holding it in place. We'll be using a 10 millimeter socket to pull it out. Now the tie down hook up here is gonna be held in with a Philips head screwdriver so we'll be using that to pull it out. With those fasteners removed you're either gonna want to use your hand or a plastic trim panel tool remover and we're gonna go right behind the weather stripping here on the outer edge and we're gonna start working our way down and kind of pulling it away and trying to pop those clips out of place so we can gain access behind this panel. You may need to come up to the top here as well and we don't need to remove the whole panel we just need to get access back here. If it makes it a little bit easier we can remove the threshold, so if you come to the bottom panel here and we just lift up it'll release some of the clips and we'll work our way across until the whole thing is removed.

Just set this inside for now and give us a little bit more room to work with so we can pull this away.We come to the inside behind our panel, we're gonna have this connector right here, it's gonna have some blue tape on it. That's gonna be the connector for our wiring. We can just remove the blue tape and this connector should match the same one that's on our Hopkins wiring. We can go ahead and plug in our Hopkins wiring, making sure it locks into place. Now the other end of our wiring gonna be going towards our spare tire and if we come to the bottom of the floor we're gonna have two plugs and we're gonna need to remove the one that closest to the drivers side. If you take that trim panel tool we'll come underneath and pop that plug out.

Then you need to take your four-pole flat end and you're gonna route it down through the hole and Hopkins has already put a grommet in so we're not gonna have to cut our existing one we're just gonna route the wiring down and drop it through. Then if we reach underneath we can pull or just from up top push push the grommet into place. We're gonna need to find a spot to mount our converter box. Right against the back of our trunk pan here would be a good spot because it's gonna be nice and out of the way, but it's also not gonna interfere with our spare tire. I'm gonna be using some foam tape that I had laying around, it doesn't come with a kit but you can either use some glue, some double sided tape, even silicone, whatever you have available as well as they have these two spots where you can put some zip ties if you can find a spot to zip tie it to. You just want to make sure that the box is gonna be secure and it's not gonna interfere with your spare tire or anything else that's in the trunk here. With the wiring done on the inside we're gonna go ahead and start putting our panels back in place. I just want to make sure all those clips line up, put our threshold back, and just reverse everything that we did earlier. Now on the outside here we have plenty of wire to reach to the end of our connector so I'm just gonna take the excess and I'm gonna tie it up behind my hitch here, just take another zip tie and securing it behind the hitch. Then we can take our included dust cap, we're gonna slide it over the end of our four-pole and we actually can go through one of the safety chain connection points and attach it to our hitch here so that way it's ready whenever we're ready to tow.Now that we have our wiring installed we're gonna go ahead and test it to make sure all the wiring and circuits are working properly. I'm gonna take my four-pole tester here and if you need one you can pick one up on our website using part number I26. We'll go ahead and plug it in and we'll grab and extra set of hands so that I can verify that the lights are working. Can I get the headlights please Good. Left turn signal Good. Right turn signal Good. And the brakes Good. Now just to be sure can I get the brakes and both turn signals please With everything looking good we're ready to hit the road. That'll finish up your look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with Four-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number HM11143865 on our 2017 Subaru Forester.
