How to Install the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness on a 2017 Ford F-150


Today on our 2017 Ford F150, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Tekonsha T-One vehicle wiring harness with a 7-way trailer connector.Here's what our wiring's going to look like once we have it installed. Now keep in mind that the brackets to mount it up are not going to come with the kit, so you may want to pick up a 7-pull bracket and a long bracket to mount to your hitch. Our wiring is going to give us a 7-way RV style connector so we'll have all of our light functions, our clearance lights, turn signals, brakes and reverse lights, and the option to put in a brake controller later on down the road.The nice thing about our wiring is that it is custom designed for our Ford F150 so we're not going to have to cut or splice any wires. It's just going to simply plug in with a t-connector and if we have the factory 4-way on the back of our truck, we can also keep that, so now we can tow a couple different kinds of trailers.If you're looking to replace your factory 7-way, or add one to the 4-pull you already have, this is going to be a great option so we can continue to tow and be safe going down the road.So now we've taking a look at our wiring and seen the end result, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin installation, we're going to move underneath, and if we follow our 4-way wire and we follow up it will connect to this connector right here. It's going to be a black connector.

It's going right over the rear subframe here. There'll be a small tab right here. We're going to push in on that tab and separate the two connectors.If we grab our new harness we can see that the t-connector is going to match up with the one on our truck. We can take the two ends and we'll plug them together and go back over the top, plug the other end in. We'll have a white wire with a ring terminal on it.

This is going to be our ground wire. We're going to want to attach this directly to the frame or an existing bolt on the frame so we have a good chassis ground. I'm actually just going to move my wire over a little bit, pull it towards the front of the truck. That way my wire can reach and I can use this screw that comes with the kit to attach it to the frame right here.Whenever you tighten on your screw for your ring terminal, you want to tighten it down to where it's not going to move, but you don't want to strip out the screw.Now we can take the tape and we're going to remove the tape off the end of the wire here. That's going to expose all the wires so we can wire up our plug.

If we look at the back of our plug and we look inside, we can see that there's going to be little pins or locking tabs for our pins to go in. We're going to want to get the instructions, and we're going to follow the diagram and put each one in the corresponding hole. The way you put them in, is we'll just take our end here and this large one's going to be for the white one. We want to make sure to push it in and you'll hear it click and lock into place. We'll do the same thing for the yellow one.

That's going to go right in the center. Then you turn it a little bit. Make sure it locks in there and it's not going to come out. Then we'll just go around putting the rest of our wires in the rest of the holes. When you put these in if you looked through the holes, you kind of see how there's a little notch. You want to make sure that it's lined up properly, otherwise it will not lock in place. This is why sometimes when you go to put it in, you may have to turn it a little bit and twist it.We'll take the gray locking tab and we're going to start on the side that has those two prongs. We'll slide it through, making sure it's kind of going in between, separating the wires. We'll push it all the way in. Then if you push down on these tabs, they'll fit right in those two holes. Now we'll have a secure connection that we can plug the plug into.We can take our 7-way plug and I'm going to slide it through the bracket. Then I'll take the included hardware and I'll pass one screw through one of the holes. Then on the backside I'm going to secure it with a locking nut. I'll do that for all four spots on our bracket so we make sure it's nice and secure. Since these are locking nuts, I'm just going to come back with a flat blade screwdriver and kind of just gently hold the nut on the back and tighten them up.We can get ready to plug in our connector, but before we do, I'm going to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the end of my harness as well as on the inside of the 7-way. That'll hopefully prevent any kind of moisture from getting inside and causing corrosion buildup. Take our 7-way, we'll line it up and plug it in.Now all we have left to do is tidy up any of the loose wires, tie them up against the frame out of the way.The final step we have in our installation is to test our wires to make sure that all the circuits are working properly. If I turn my headlights on, we can see that my clearance light function is working, as well as my left turn signal, my right turn signal, and my brakes. We're even going to have backup lights if your trailer is equipped with those as well. Since our track had a factory 4-way on it, we want to make sure that that's still working as well. We can see that I have my tail light circuit, as well as the left turn signal, our right turn signal, and our brakes. All we have left to do now is hook up to our trailer and hit the road.That will finish up your look at the Tekonsha T-One vehicle wiring harness with a 7-way trailer connector on our 2017 Ford F150.
