How to Install the Hopkins Tail Light Wiring Kit on a 2016 Jeep Wrangler

Today on our 2016 Jeep Wrangler, we're going to show you how to install the Hopkins Custom Taillight Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles, part number HM56200. What this is going to allow us to do is hook up our motor home, and it's going to operate the lights on the vehicle just as if we we're sitting inside the car turning the signals on. It does that with the diode converter here, so this box has built-in diodes. This is going to prevent any back feed into the electrical system of the towed vehicle, and the diodes are going to convert whatever signal it's getting from our taillights into a usable signal. That diode converter is going to take the signal coming in from the motor home, it's going to translate it into signals that the vehicle can use to operate its taillights. Great thing about it is when it's not connected to your motor home, there's going to be absolutely no interference. Now to begin our installation, we need to remove the driver's side taillight.

To do that we're going to take off the two Phillip's head screws here on the inside. We can pull the assembly out, we'll see a plug right here we want to separate. To do that, we'll press down on that tab and then just wiggle it apart. What we're going to do is take a little bit of the terminal grease, and we're going to apply it to our connectors. We'll just slide the wiring connector right into our factory connector.

You want to hear that click. We'll be able to give it a push pull there. Now we're going to pass our bonded yellow, green and brown wire. It also has that white ground wire on it. We want to pass that down through ...

See there's just a foam pad here. Once you pull that foam pad out of the way, you'll be able to see right down to the ground. We'll pull that pad out, there's going to be a hole right there in the middle of it. Let's go ahead and pass both kits of our wire through. Now if we've got it handy we can use just a little bit of electrical tape here. Just tidy up our wires.

Now we can take our passenger's side connector and also our four pull terminal. Those will come out right down here on the bottom. We'll just pull through on our slack and then get our pad put back into position. Now let's get our box mounted. There aren't any really good, flat surfaces to mount to except for maybe over here on the outside of the car, so what we're going to do is use this piece of metal that's right here. We can get a couple zip ties around that and get our box secured. Now we'll put a little bit of terminal grease here on the back side of our taillight housing itself, and we'll put it right back in position. Now we're going to take our passenger's side connector and our four pull wire, we're going to pass it right up over the frame. We'll run it in between the frame and the shock there just like that. Now we're going to take just a . You can use a thick piece of wire, we're using a little bit of airline tubing here. I'm going to tape that passenger plug off to it. I'm just going to use it as a guide to help pull our wiring over to the other side of the vehicle for us. I'm going to go right through the channel right here, actually keep this protected from exhaust and stuff like that. Then we've got to bring this one over to the same location here. Then you'll see a little panel right here. Now we'll take a couple of the supplied zip ties. We're just going to use these to help pull our wires up and over out of the way, keeping them clear of any moving parts. Any time we use a zip tie we want to trim off the excess and just make it look nicer. Now we can do the same thing for our green, yellow, and our brown wire, and we'll run it over that same channel. If we look right up through the hole here in the bottom there's another hole, so we want our pull wire to go out of that hole that's on top. That'll allow us when the time comes to head right up to the front of the vehicle. Let's finish up this passenger's side wiring, then we'll pull out the passenger's side taillight, same way we did the driver's side. We can separate the connector behind that in the same fashion. Now we want to reach in, there's a panel there. It may have a little bit of foam on top that you want to clear out of the way, then we can reach right through that hole, and we'll be able to pull our wiring up. What we're going to do is trim out the little corner section here. Give us enough room for our wiring to pass through. Should give us plenty of room there for that to pass through. Just like that. Now we'll do the same thing to this side. We're going to zip tie it up, keep it from hitting or rubbing on anything. We can make sure we've got it routed where we want it, then we'll be able to pull up any slack into that taillight compartment and secure it there. Then we'll apply a little terminal grease to the T connector, slide our factory plug in. Then let's gather up any of the excess that we have here. We're just going to bundle it up making sure we have enough room to make our connection to our taillight. Now we can take a little bit of our sealant here, go ahead and seal up that hole we created to pass through our wiring. Now we'll add the remaining terminal grease here to the back side of our taillight housing, and we'll get it put back into place. Just want to plug our T connector plug into that factory plug, give it a good push pull, and we'll slide it on in. All right, that'll take care of the rear side here. Let's go ahead and get that four pull wire in up to the front of the vehicle. We're going to be using our airline tubing here to run it. You can use the same thing you did before, whether it was a stiff piece of wire, whatever you decided on. I'm just going to go right up over the top of the fuel tank here, coming toward our passenger's side a little bit. You see we're just staying with the outside of the frame rail here. It's just going to provide a good anchor point for us so we won't have to worry about our wires hanging down there in the rear. We can go right up over our front axle, and we can just follow along with that same wire loom. It comes up, use a couple more zip ties. At this point I'm out of the zip ties that we're provided, so we'll switch over to just what we've got laying around. For your installation you might need a few extra. Here's where we're going to be mounting the front of our wiring to. What I'm going to do is pull out the two push fasteners that are here on the front fascia of our Jeep, and hopefully that'll give me just enough room to pull that down and get that four pull over the top. There we go. We've got our wiring here at the front of the vehicle. The customer is going to use a six way plug. Rather than the four pull plug, they're going to use a six pull plug. This is from Blue Ox, it's going to be a direct replacement, nice rubber boot on the back of it to protect our connections. What we need to do is just trim off our four wires here. This is going to run right through the back of that plug. Just go ahead and strip that end back. Then if we look on the back of the plug itself we've got RT, that's going to be for right. LT, got GD, that's going to be for ground, TM for trailer marker, S for stop, and then the middle one there is our trailer auxiliary. This one is going to be our ground wire, so that's going to go to the GD spot, which will be right here. Go ahead and back out our ground screw. Place our wire in, then all we have to do is tighten the screw back down to secure it. We're not going to need all of this wiring. We're going to leave some so we've got enough to tidy ti up, zip tie it off back there, and also if we ever need to make any changes we'll leave ourselves a little bit, but we don't need the full length of the wire, so let's just trim off what we don't need and pull to separate our wiring there. We'll strip the end back on each of those. Let's start with our brown wire there, that's going to be our trailer marker wire, so that's going to be the TM. Here we've got out LT, that's going to be for our left turn, our driver's side turn. That'll be our yellow wire. Then the last one will be our green wire. That's going to go to our RT, or our right turn. Now we'll just go back a little bit, get our wires taped together. One thing this will do is it won't allow us to see that black and green and brown white wire running up and back, but also it's going to keep it tidy and also give us a little bit of weather protection. Then mount our wiring right up front there. All right. Let's get that ground wire connected. Like that, and we'll use that nice piece of steel right there and a self tapping screw to make our ground connection. All right, ground it out. Let's just gather up our excess here, zip tie it off, and we'll be in good shape and we'll test out the system. Now we can take our six pull pigtail connector here. Push that all the way in so it's nice and secure, then we'll connect our other seven pull into a motor home, or if we just need to test it we can hook it to a regular vehicle. Now the first thing we'll test out will be the controls inside of the vehicle that's going to be towed. We want to be sure when we turn on our parking lights or our headlights that we've got the lights that are going to come on on each side. We're going to make sure our left blinker's working, right blinker's working, and finally our brakes. With everything working, we'll know that we didn't change anything in the system, so now we can move on to our towing vehicle. Turn on our headlights there, we should have running lights in the back. Then we'll switch to our left blinker, right blinker, and then our brakes. With our wiring working properly, that's going to complete today's installation of the Hopkins Custom Taillight Wiring for Towed Vehicles, part number HM56200 on our 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.
