How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2016 Jeep Wrangler

Today on our 2016 Jeep Wrangler we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Curt Custom Fit T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, with the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. The part number is C55124. Here's what our wiring kit's going to look like. It's really simple and very straightforward. Here's what we want, that's our 4-pole trailer connector, that's going to give us tail lights, blinkers, and brakes to our trailer, or cargo carrier, whatever we've got hooked up. Then the bare terminal, that's going to be for our ground. You're going to see that's going to run through a good length of 4-pole wire. That's going to be connected right in between the driver's side tail light plug.

This would typically plug into the back of the tail light. We're going to separate that at this end, and it will plug in right there. We'll also find a piece of metal, or a bolt, that we can connect our ground to, that's going to ground the trailer to our vehicle, give us a good connection. They're included some wire ties, a self-tapping screw for that ground if we need it. A dust cover to go over the end of our 4-pole there, keep it protected. We also have some instructions.

To do our installation all we're going to need, some side cutters, we're going to need a Phillip's screwdriver, and maybe a couple extra zip ties if you want them. We'll see when we get in there. To begin our installation we want to take out the two screws closet to the middle here on our tail light, a Phillip's screwdriver for that. Take those two screws out, and we'll set those aside. Then what we want to do is push towards the middle of the Jeep, and then pull straight out. See our connector right here, I'm going to press in on that locking tab, and then pull out like that, and set this aside.

Then we can take care of getting our 4-pole put in. If we look right down on this angle, right down here on the floor of the Jeep there's going to be a small foam pad, you can kind of see it here. If we take it out all the way you'll actually be able to look all the way straight down and through the underside of the Jeep. I'm going to pass my 4-pole right through that center hole that exists in our pad there. I'm going to place it right down through that hole. You can see it actually come out here below the Jeep, and then we'll put this right back into position.

We'll connect our factory plug right into our T-connector. Since there isn't a good ground stud located in this area what we're going to do is use that self-tapping screw. In addition to the Phillip's screwdriver and the side cutters, you'll need a 1/4" bit driver, or a 1/4" socket, so you can start your screw. There, get that grounded out nice and secure. It's time for us to grab our tail light, and we'll plug it back in. Then put it in the opposite way of taking it out. Now all we have to do is get our screws threaded back in, and we'll go to the bottom side, and route our 4-pole over toward our hitch. What we're going to do is take our 4-pole, go right up over the frame here, and route it right over here just like that. We can take the provided dust cover, go around the end for us, use that to secure our wiring off there. Now what I'll do is take a couple zip ties, go up in this area and secure this wiring up so it doesn't come down. Trim off our excess there, and that should keep it up and out of the way. All we have to do is test it out and make sure it's working. To do our test we're going to use a small tester that we've got here, you could also use a test light. There are our running lights, and our left blinker, our right blinker, and finally our brakes. With everything working properly that's going to complete our installation of the Curt Custom Fit T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number C55134, on our 2016 Jeep Wrangler.
