How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2016 GMC Acadia

Today on our 2016 GMC Acadia we're gonna be taking a look at installing a tow ready T-One vehicle wiring harness for factory tow package four-pole flat trailer connector. Part number one-one-eight-two-seven-zero. Here's what it's gonna look like once it's installed. A really nice feature about this wiring harness is it plugs into your factory harness and does not require any tapping into any wires, or cutting, or splicing. It's gonna plug into a plug that's already on your vehicle and you're gonna install some included fuses and relays. It's gonna run through your factory fuse box, then you know everything's gonna work properly because it was done that way from the factory.

This is a very simple install it just plugs in and zip ties along the bottom of your vehicle. It's gonna give you a four-pole flat trailer connector, and if you decide later that you want to go up to a five, six, or seven pole connector, it's compatible with that style adapters. Does have a nice weather tight cap, it's gonna help seal out any dirt and moisture that can get in there . and it is connected so you can not lose it, if you we're to not plug it back on. Now we can go ahead and show you how to install it. Now this is what our kit is going to consist of, we're gonna have a plug on one end that's gonna plug into our factory harness ...

and our four flat on the other end. It's also gonna come with some relays, some ten amp and thirty amp fuses that we're gonna put into our fuse box, and some zip ties. Our first first step, we're gonna come over to the vehicle and remove the cover that covers up the area that our hitch is gonna be located. We're gonna turn these clips at the bottom .. and slip it out, and pull it down.

That's gonna give us access to the location where we're gonna mount our four flat connector. Now we're gonna have to access our factory plug, it's gonna be on the right rear fender of our vehicle . it's gonna be up behind our bumper. We're gonna plug our wiring harness into the end of that. We're gonna go ahead and put some dielectric grease on our connection mount to help keep out corrosion.

If you don't have any you can pick some up on our website, part number one-one-seven-five-five. Just a little bit in there . want to make sure that we have everything sealed up, and we'll take our connector, we're gonna already have the locked part to the outside, and we'll slip it up in, and we'll listen for it to click. Give it a little tug, make sure it did clip in. Then we can route our wire and zip tie it on the bottom of the body. Now to route our wire across the back of the car, we're gonna go ahead and use a couple of metal loom clamps that are available on our website, part number A-zero-five-zero-zero. We'll take our clamp and we're gonna wrap it around the wire . and we'll place another one up over the top so we can keep it away from our exhaust. Now after we came through our two loom clamps to keep it away from our exhaust, I've just zip tied it with some longer zip ties that we picked up at the local hardware store, to the tube of our hitch. Come on the cross, making sure we stayed away from the backside of our hitch, so it doesn't get pinched when you put your ball mount in there, then we tied it to the bracket on the back of our hitch, so when we're ready to use it we can just take off our weather proof cap . and replace it, then we can place our cover back on and everything is completely hidden, out of sight. Now we come up under the hood, on the passenger side and we're gonna remove the fuse box cover, so we'll just push in with a little screw driver, and release the tabs, there's three of them. One more on this side. We'll take the cover out of the way, and we're gonna install a couple of fuses and some relays. Now we're gonna start placing our ten amp fuses into our fuse box, we're gonna start with the first one which is gonna be in position F forty-one, right there, take our ten amp fuse and we're gonna drop it down into the slot, and we'll press it down making it nice and flat against the top. We're gonna go to F twenty-one which is gonna be right there, we're gonna put in a ten amp as well. Then we'll go to F seventeen, which'll be right above it . and our last ten amp is gonna go into the position F eight, which is gonna be located right there. Now we have a couple thirty amps to put in, it's gonna be F thirty-four . we're gonna have one in F thirty, this will be the one right above it. So we're only gonna install two thirty amp fuses, and we'll have one as a spare, then we're gonna have two relays to install. It's gonna go into R sixteen . and one in R fifteen . this will only go in one way, it won't fit the other direction so you cant make a mistake there. Now we went ahead and installed our fuses last, that way we're not applying power to the plug in the back before we start plugging things in. We can set our cover back in place, simply snap it back into position. Now we can test our wiring with our Curt 4-pole trailer wiring tester, part number I-two-six. We're gonna look for our tail light single, our left turn, our right turn, followed by our brake. Good, everything works, now we're ready to hitch up to our trailer. That's gonna do it for our look at and install of the tow ready T-One vehicle wiring harness for factory tow package, with a four pole flat trailer connector, part number one-one-eight-two-seven-zero, on our 2016 GMC Acadia.
