How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2015 Subaru Forester

Today on our 2015 Subaru Forester, we're going to install part number C56040. This is a Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. To get access to our wiring, we need to get inside the vehicle, so we'll open up the back hatch. Our wiring harness is going to be located along this panel right here, so we need to go ahead and remove the floor coverings and some panels as well so we can get behind this. Now these push pins can be a little bit finicky, but we use a trim panel tool to catch the edge right here and pull it up, and then snap. Next this threshold will have to come off, and rock it with steady pressure if you grab the edge here and pull up on it, then it'll pop loose. Now there's a couple of catches here, so I have to push it forward a little bit to release it.

There it goes. Just a steady pressure and pull straight up with it. Now we need to pull this panel loose, so we're going to have to remove this tie down point right here. We'll take a really small flat screwdriver and we'll pull the cover back. Then we'll use a 10mm socket on that bolt.

Let's go ahead and work this panel loose from the side. We'll feel around for our trim panel until we find the attachment points to unsnap. There's one about right here. There it is. About right here is the other one on top. There you go.

There it is. If we gently peel back our panel, we can see our connection point right here. It has blue tape wrapped around it. Let's go ahead and free it up. Basically get the tape out of our way.

Let's go ahead and take our wire harness and plug into it. Next we'll go ahead and work with our white wire for the rain terminal. Now instead of trying wrestling a drill inside there, we're just going to simply take the wire and peel it back down where it can run into an area it's nice and easy to get a hold of. Where the steel overlaps with this extra material, we'll go ahead and attach it right here. We need to add our 10 amp fuse that comes with a fuse holder. Put it inside. Now let's go ahead and find a place to mount our module. Now the module comes with adhesive, so we'll go ahead and make sure we've got the modules clean, and then we'll find a location on the sheet metal underneath, or maybe the plastic to help keep it up and out of the way. Yeah in fact, there's a nice little spot right here just below our anchor point opening, and we'll go ahead and make our attachment there. Take the adhesive, one side will go to the module, and the other side will go to the back side of our plastic. With our connections made and our module in place, we can go ahead and reinstall all our interior components. When we put our floor coverings back into place, make sure we have easy access to our wire. There's a little opening right here. We can actually take our wire and store it like that. This can stay on the inside with the jack tool that's not being used. When we need to use it, we'll simply pull it out, and just pull it out the back and shut the hatch on it. The door seal is thick enough so it won't hurt anything when you shut the hatch. Just stay away from here. It's probably a good idea to hold it off to the side, let the hatch close, and then pull out what you need to go down to your trailer. One last little bit, it also comes with a cover for the 4 pull. With everything hooked up, it's a good idea to try it with a tester before you try it on a trailer. Let's go ahead and do that now. Let's go ahead and test it, we'll put our ground to our white wire and we'll test our brown wire for running light circuit. Yellow for left turn and green for right turn. Then we'll have a solid signal for brake on our green and yellow wires. Looks like everything works. That'll finish it for part number C56040, the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector on our 2015 Subaru Forester. .
