How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2005 Dodge Magnum

Today on this 2005 Dodge Magnum, well be installing the Tow-Ready Wiring harness part number 118402. After opening the rear cargo door, we need to remove both taillight assemblies. To remove them, there are two pushpin fasteners on the side of the taillight and a plastic wing nut behind the trim panel here. Well first remove the push pins then the wing nut. To do this, well be using our panel removal tool. To get to the wing nut, we need to remove the access door then peel back the insulation to reveal the wing nut.

Once that is removed, well gently wiggle the taillight assembly out and away from the vehicle. We need to be careful not to break the alignment tabs underneath. Well next disconnect the assembly by pressing on the lock tab here on the connector which will enable us to pull them apart. Well see that aside from now and repeat the same process on the passenger side. Now well take the connector with the yellow and brown wire and plug it in line with the manufacturers wiring making sure you press them together firmly so they all lock into place.

On the same harness is a white wire with a ring terminal attached to it. This is our ground wire. Well take our provided self-tapping screw and attach it directly to the vehicle. Next, were going to take our T connector with the red and green wires and route them over to the passenger side. Well go down behind the bumper cover.Quick tech tip: You can take a piece of air tubing or metal running it down and over using it as a fish-wire to assist in pulling your connector to the passenger side.Once were at the passenger side, well remove the tape off of our harness and pull wire.

Next, were going to route our 4-pole. Well basically be doing this in the same manner only well stop at the center of the bumper by the license plate. Now with our pole wire in position, well again just tape it to our new 4-pole. Once that is done, our converter box has one more wire to hook up which is the red power wire. Using the provided butt connector, well connect the red wire to our black wire which will eventually be ran to the front of the vehicle and connect it to the positive terminal of the battery.

Once our connection is made, Ill wrap it up with some electrical tape then well tape our power wire to the 4-pole and pull them both back through the bottom of the vehicle near the trailer hitch. Now with our connections made and pulled through, well need to mount our converter box here. Well peel off the double-sided tape and locate a nice clean surface to adhere it to. Just below the bumper cover here is the perfect location. With that mounted, well tuck the excess wires down and behind the bumper then we can reattach the taillights on both sides of the vehicle. Were not underneath the vehicle and with our 4-pole connector, we can simply fold it over and zip-tie it to the top of the trailer hitch. Then well secure the 4-pole into the receiver tube tail loop and clip off the excess of our zip ties. Next, well run our power wire to the battery at the front of the vehicle. When doing this, you wanna avoid any hot spots or pinch points such as the exhaust or suspension components. With our wire run to the front, well route it over to the battery and zip tie it into place and cutoff the length that we need. Well take the yellow fuse holder, cut the loop in half and add a butt connector at one end a ring terminal to the other. The butt connector will hook up to the black power wire while the terminal will be connected directly to the battery. And finally we can install our fuse to our fuse holder. With our connections made, our install is complete. There you have it for the Tow-Ready Wiring Harness part number 118402 on our 2005 Dodge Magnum.
