How to Install the Curt Class V XD Trailer Hitch on a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500


Hi there, Chevrolet owners. Today on your 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install Curt's Class 5 two inch trailer hitch receiver.This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. Now, our customer does have an aftermarket bed installed on his truck here, but all the attachment points are going to be the same on your truck. The bed here doesn't interfere. If you do have any type of components like this, you just want to check the frame on the bottom side as well as on the inside of the frame, because that's where our attachments go. Once you have a factory bumper, it is going to stick out fairly similar to this one, although you're not going to have this cutout right here.It's a Class 5 2 x 2 inch receiver, so it's going to be great for all of your towing needs.

Whether you're wanting to use it for accessories, like a hitch-mounted salt spreader, or if you're wanting to haul some equipment to the job site. You could hook up your flatbed trailer and bring that along with you. This hitch uses a 5/8 inch hitch pin and clip. Now, one doesn't come included with the hitch, but we've got plenty of available here at etrailer. You can also get locking ones to protect your investments.On bottom, we have a very large opening on our plate-style safety chain loops that should accommodate just about every shape, size, and style of safety chain.

You can see here, the smaller ones. We can put those on there, and our larger ones also don't have any problem working with this hitch.This hitch features a 2,550 pound tongue weight, and that's the force going down on top of the receiver. That is a pretty massive amount of tongue weight if you're needing some hitch-mounted accessories here, such as salt spreaders. Those ones don't even come close most of the time to this tongue weight. But there's also plenty of tongue weight available here for the equipment that you're going to be bringing along on your flatbed trailer.

You'll have plenty of weight here for heavy distributed weights pushing down on the back. It also features a 17,000 pound gross towing capacity, which is how much that it can pull behind it. Again, so you can bring plenty of your equipment along with you so you can get the job done at the site.And now I've got some measurements to help you when deciding on your accessories. From the ground to the top inside edge of our receiver tube, it measures about 19 inches. This is important when determining if you need to drop, or rise, or ratio on your accessories.

Our second measurement here is going to work with our aftermarket bumper. But from the center of our hitch pin hole to the edge of our bumper here, it's about 2-1/2 inches. On your factory bumper, I would expect the hole to likely be slightly back from the bumper, but not very far.Now that we've covered some of the features of our hitch, why don't you follow along with me in the shop and we'll show you how to get it installed We've gone ahead and lowered down the spare tire. You can refer to your instructions for assistance with doing that. Our customer's here was a little bit different due to the back end here. We've already got that out of the way. Now, we need to get our heat shield here just a little bit out of our way. There's one bolt located right here. We're going to remove it from the frame, and we're going to do that with a 13 millimeter socket.This will just let us get a little bit of clearance if we need it. We can just kind of pivot this just a little bit out of our way. We're now going to have to fish wire in some hardware, and this is only going to happen if you don't have weld nuts in this hole. You'll see there's a large opening in the side of the frame here. This is our forward-most attachment. If you have that weld nut there, then you don't need to do this step. You'll be using a bolt inaudible 00:03:29 to just thread into to that weld nut. If you don't have a weld nut there, you'll be following along with us, and we'll take our fish wire. We're going to go up through that hole, and then we'll come out the side here on the large hole.And then you do have multiple carriage bolts that come in your kit. You're going to have the shorter ones, and these ones are slightly longer. You can see it's only a little bit longer. Do pay close attention to that. These forward attachment ones, if you're feeding carriage bolts in like we are, you're going to use the slightly longer one. We're going to grab that slightly longer carriage bolt. We're also going to grab a spacer. We're going to slide the spacer over the coiled end, thread our carriage bolt on, and then we can just drop those down in the frame there. Then you just pull them down through the hole. Sometimes your spacer, you got to orient them just the right way. So, I have to move it around a little bit until you can get that to drop down. Now that I've got this one dropped down, we're going to do the same thing over on the other side of the vehicle.We have another bolt that we're going to be fish wiring in, except for this one you really don't need the fish wire. Your kit only comes with one for each side. If you want, you can remove this one by unthreading it and using it back here at the back for your other one. But I don't really seem like it's too necessary. You can just reach it right here. We're going to take our spacer. This is one of the shorter carriage bolts . slide that through your spacer and then just poke that through the hole right there. We're going to poke one on the other side as well.Now with another set of hands, we'll lift our hitch up. If you had your fish wire still attached, you can pull those down through the back hole, or you can pull them off first and line up those bolts with the holes in the hitch just like that. Then we'll take one of our flange nuts that comes in our kit, and we're going to thread it right on to that carriage bolt there. Once we get one started on each side, the hitch will hold itself up, making it easier to install the rest of your hardware.Now, we had inaudible 00:05:27 using the carriage bolts as we didn't have weld nuts. If you did have well nuts, what you would use would be hex head bolts that come in your kit. You take conical tooth washer, slide it down with the teeth facing away from the head of the bolt, and thread it into those weld nuts. Now, here at our rear attachment, we're going to be using the hex head bolts regardless if you have weld nuts in the frame or not. If you do have weld nuts, we'll just thread directly right into that weld nut. If you don't have weld nuts though, just slide your bolt up through the frame and then thread it into the nut that comes with your kit.We can now attach our side plates. They look like this here. The angle here, we actually want to go towards the front of the vehicle. That's going to line up the square holes with those square holes. And then we've got our single hole here. This is going to slide through. We'll slide our side plate over the carriage bolt that we fit in, and then we'll secure it with the flange nut. We can then take the square holes here in our hitch, and we can line up our carriage bolts. As long as you have your carriage bolt going through a square hole, it doesn't necessarily matter which direction it's going through. We're going to be putting ours from the outside in just because it'll be a little easier to make the attachment. Again, we're going to secure that with a flange nut.Same thing in the hole just below it. We can now go back and tighten up our hardware. We're going to tighten up the bolts that attach it to the bottom of the frame first. Then we'll attach our side plates next. For the carriage bolts, the nuts that attach to those, we'll be using a 19 millimeter socket. Then we'll tighten up our hex head bolts with the 23 millimeter socket. You may need to use a 19 millimeter wrench inside the frame to hold the nut. Sometimes it does like the spin. And then our side plates. We can go back and torque our hardware to the specifications found in our instructions.Now that our hitch is fully torqued down, all that's left is for us to re-install the spare tire. For your heat shield, the bolt you're not going to put back in. Our hitch does kind of cover the attachment back up. So, you can just push that back over and then put the spare tire back up. They'll be plenty of room for everything to fit back up in here. And that completes our installation of Curt's Class 5 two inch trailer hitch receiver on our 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500.
