How to Install the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch on a 2018 Mazda 3

Today on our 2018 Mazda 3, you're going to be taking a look at, I'm going to show you how to install, the Draw-Tite Class I Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver. This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. You can see, the cross tube is tucked up right next to the bottom of the bumper fascia. It's not going to stick out too far. We're not going to have to worry about hitting our legs, or our shins on it when we're loading and unloading the back of the vehicle, and it maintains a nice clean look. It fits very well with this vehicle.This is going to be a class one hitch, inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter receiver tube opening.

Hitch pin hole is going to be half inch in diameter. The hitch pin clip does not come with this hitch, however, it can be found here at We're going to have rolled steel style safety chain loops to give us plenty of room for different size safety chain hooks. This hitch is going to be great for any of your hitch mounted accessories, like your bike racks and cargo carriers.As far as our weight capacities go, we're going to have a 200 pound max tongue, which is the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube, and a 2,000 pound max gross trailer weight, which is the trailer plus the load included. I do recommend checking the owner's manual of your vehicle to make sure the vehicle can withstand that amount of weight and you're going to pick the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch.

This hitch is going to have a nice black powder coat finish that's really going to resist any rust or corrosion.Now, let me give you a few measurements to help you when deciding on any hitch mounted accessories you may need. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of the bumper is going to be about two and a half inches. From the ground to the top inner most part of the receiver tube is going to be about 11 and a quarter inches. It's a good idea to get a raised shank for better ground clearance.Now, let's show you how to get this installed. To start our installation, we're going to need to lower our exhaust.

Before doing that, we need to make sure our exhaust is supported. I'm going to use a strap. I like to hang it from each spring. You can, pretty much, hang it anywhere that's solid. The springs are usually easy to get to.

I'm just going to pull it up tight against the bottom of our pipe, there. We're going to take a lubricant, it can be soapy water, usually works well. You're going to spray the rubber hanger on each side of the vehicle. You're actually going to have four of them. You're going to have two on each side.Now we're going to take a pry bar and we're going to start working that rubber hammer off. Then we're going to repeat that same thing for the other three. Once you've got all four hangers removed, go ahead and lower our exhaust a little bit, to give us a little extra room to work. Take a utility knife, we're going to pull of this tape, here. It's going to expose that weld nut. We're going to do this on both sides of the vehicle. What I do recommend is, if you have anything, like this, this stuff, make sure you shave this down, so when our hitch is sitting up there, it's sitting flush against our frame.Now we're going to take out pull wire, we're going to go into this last hole, come out this hole. Take a spacer block, carriage bolt, put the carriage bolt inside the spacer block, and we're going to thread it into our pull wire. Press your spacer block up into the frame, then pull. We're going to do that same thing on the other side. Now we'll get our hitch into position. It is going to make it a little bit easier with an extra set of hands. We're going to put our wires through the corresponding holes in the hitch. We're going to raise it up over our exhaust, then go ahead and put hex bolt with a conical tooth washer. You want to make sure the teeth are facing towards the hitch. We're going to get one into our weld nut on each side to help hold our hitch into place, while we install our remaining hardware.Once we get that one in, on each side, we can remove our pull wire. We're going to add a conical tooth washer. Again, make sure the teeth are facing towards the hitch and a nut. Next we're going to tighten and torque our hardware to specifications on the instructions. Next you can reinstall your exhaust. Go ahead and spray down our hangers again. Once you have your exhaust hangers back up, you can remove your safety strap. That will do it for a look at, and installation, on a Draw-Tite Class I Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2018 Mazda 3.
