How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2017 Honda Pilot


Today in our 2017 Honda Pilot, we'll be having a look at and installing the Draw-Tite Class 3 Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 75225. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. The first thing that we'll notice about our hitch is that the main frame of the hitch itself is completely hidden behind a rear fascia. Th only parts that we will see hanging down is the actual class 3 2-inc receiver itself with our safety chain loops on the side of the receiver. Now on our safety chain loops, they're a unique design where they're on a plate that's welded to the side of the receiver which has a large opening right here, and they actually hang down a little bit below the receiver, which isn't a big deal. A lot of factory hitches on a lot of higher-end vehicles actually have a design like this because they give you optimal room for inserting pins and locking devices into your hitch to secure whatever hitch-mounted accessory you have. Now off to the left-side of our hitch, towards the driver's side, you'll notice that they have a bracket that's welded onto the frame of the hitch. What this bracket allows us to do is to mount any electrical connections that we have to hook-up to our trailer's wiring systems, either a 4-full 00:01:17 flat, 7-way RV or whatever other style of electrical connector you have, you can mount it right back here. Now on the side of our receiver, you'll notice that we have two pinholes.

The larger one towards the front of our vehicle is our industry-standard five-eighths of an inch diameter hitch pinhole that we use to secure our hitch-mounted accessories. The one closest to the rear of the hitch and the rear of the vehicle, what this one is is a J-pin stabilization device hole. What a J-pin stabilization device does is help take away some of the annoying shake, play and rattle out of what is inserted in your receiver. At the very back of our receiver, we have this nice welded on collar right here, which helps give our hitch a little bit more strength and durability, but also finishes off with a nice clean look. Now this hitch features a 900 pound max tongue weight rating which is the amount of force pushing down. It also features a 6,000 pound max gross trailer weight rating which is the amount you're pulling. It does support the use of weight distribution.

However, the max gross tongue weight rating stays the same at 900 pounds but our max gross trailer weight rating increases to 8,000 pounds. You'll want to consult with the owner's manual of the Pilot and not exceed the limits of the vehicle as rated for. Now what I really like about this hitch compared to other ones on the market is that we have a lot of clearance around our fascia with our receiver opening here, making this hitch an ideal candidate to use with bike racks and cargo carriers. Additionally, I do like the style of safety chain loops that our hitch here has, the best out of all the ones on the market because, if we have a large hitch-locking device installed to secure our ball mount into our vehicle's hitch, we don't have to worry about that area blocking our safety chain loops and making them difficult to install our safety chains onto our hitch. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need such as a ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier. You're looking at about 14 and a half inches from the ground to the top of the receiver opening and about five inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rear-most part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. All right, to begin our install, we'll start by opening our hatch.

Now we'll open up our cargo cover. Now we'll gain access to our spare tire tools, they're off on the driver's side. Right in the middle of our cargo area, we'll see our spare tire indicator here. We'll pry this open, take out this rubber plug. We'll use our tire iron, small end, to go over that part, then we'll use our hook, go into our tire iron, go counter-clockwise and we'll lower our spare tire.

Then we'll get our spare tire out of the way. With our spare tire down now, we have clear access to all of our attachment points. We'll have a look over at our driver's side and we'll point them out. We have three weld nuts on our frame rail right at the bottom. Our passenger side is the exact same way, so whatever we do on the driver's side, we'll do the same on the passenger side. It's a good idea to take a wire brush and clean out those weld nuts of any loose dirt and debris which could make it difficult to go in. We have these brushes available on our website as part number 814092. So we'll just go in and out of them a few times to help clean up the threads. Right, now that we have all of our weld nuts cleaned out, I'll point out how our hardware's gonna work. We have six identical bolts and six identical conical toothed washers. The washer will slide onto the bolt, the teeth will face away from the bolthead towards the hitch and the body of the vehicle. And inaudible 00:05:29 the hardware's the same for all the holes. All right, with all of our hardware in place, we'll now use a 22 millimeter socket and tighten it down. Okay, now all of our bolts are tightened down, we'll torque them to the amounts specified in the instructions. We went ahead and put back up the spare tire and as you can see, it fits nice and perfectly back where it originally was so there's no worries about our spare tire not fitting back into place with the hitch installed. We went ahead and put back our cover here for our spare tire lowering mechanism, we put our tools back in place. Now we can close up our cover, close our hatch and we're ready to hit the road. And that completes our look at an installation of the Draw-Tite Class 3 Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 75225 on our 2017 Honda Pilot.
