How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Ram 1500

Today on our 2016 RAM 1500, we will be taking a look at and installing the Draw Tite Max-Frame Custom Fit Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 75662. Here is what our Class 3 Receiver Hitch is going to look like once it is installed. It is going to have a very stock and sleek looking design on the back end of the vehicle, being nice and tucked up underneath, with the chain tie downs and your receiver tube being the only thing visible. It is going to secure really easily and attach, making installation a snap. A few things about this, is it is going to be black, powder coated to prevent any kind of rust and corrosion. As well as have a fully welded design, to add that extra strength and durability over a long period of time. It will have two pin holes, a 5/8 pin hole for your two inch accessories as well as a 1/2 inch pin hole directly in front of it for your J-Pin stabilization device.

It will have a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening offering a 600 pound max tongue capacity and 6000 pound towing capacity. With weight distribution, that is going to go up quite a bit to 1000 tongue capacity and 10,000 pounds towing capacity. You can see that this is going to be a real durable and easy solution to your problems. Let's go ahead and get a few measurements to assist you in selecting those two inch receiver accessories. Whether that will be your ball mount, your bike rack or your cargo carriers. From the center of the pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper, there is going to be about two and a half inches.

From the top of the receiver tube to the ground, will be about 20 and 1/8 inches. First thing we are going to do is lower down our spare tire, just to give us a little bit more access underneath the back end of the vehicle. All right, first thing we are going to do is locate the mounting points for our new receiver hitch. They are going to be right here on the back side of the bumper beam, one here and one here. Those will be our two mounting locations, on the back side of the bumper beam and then we will have one that goes through the bumper. Now we will go ahead and take out our bolt leader, and we are going to thread it through the hole, pushing it down through the bumper beam, coming out the end. Go ahead and put on your locking block, over the bolt leader and thread on your carriage bolt.

Once you have the carriage bolt on, we will go ahead and press it down into the bumper beam. Grabbing the pole wire and bolt leader and pulling down. We will take our second bolt leader and press it up through the other side of the bumper beam, coming out the end, or we can put on our spacer block and thread on our carriage bolt. We will pull it down, just like we did before, where we have it real close coming through. We will raise our receiver hitch into position, grabbing the bolt leader and putting it through the back side of our new receiver. Once you have both the bolt leaders through, you can then raise it up into position.

You are going to have to go underneath of the back of the bumper and rotate it up in. Once you have it rotated into position, we will go ahead and pull both of the bolts through. Go ahead and unthread our bolt leader and we will take our connicle tooth washer, which will look like so, with the teeth facing towards the new receiver. Then we will take our nut and place it on the back side. Be careful not to press on the back end of the bumper beam. We will go ahead and tighten those on, hand tight. Now we will go ahead and put on our other bolt and tighten that one up first. Go ahead and remove the bumper cap in the center and we will place our long bolt with the connicle teeth washer on it as well, down through the whole and into our new receiver hitch. We will need to place our nut in there first though, so that way we have something to thread into. We will go ahead and tighten that down. We will go ahead and tighten our back two now. Now that we have all of our bolts tightened, we will go ahead torque them down to manufacturers specifications. We will go ahead and take the new provided cover and place it over the top of our bolt. Press it down and return the plastic cover back to the owner, or put it in your glove box. That will do it for our review and installation of Draw Tite Max-Frame Custom Fit Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 75662, on our 2016 RAM 1500.
