How to Install a Curt Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Kia Sorento

Today on our 2016 Kia Sorento, we're going to take a look at, and show you how to install the Curt Custom-Fit Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver. It offers the 2 inch opening. It's part number is C13195. Here's what our hitch is going to look like once installed. As you can see it tucks up really nice right underneath that rear bumper. We're using all factory connection points with the installation, so we don't have to do any drilling or any modification. We'll lower the exhaust down just to give us some room to work, lower the appearance panel down here to give us a little bit of room to work, but really not that involved.

Pretty straight forward installation. This is a Class 3 so we're going to have the 2 in x 2 in receiver tube opening. Works great with many different accessories, and with this one there's plenty of room on each side and around the collar here. Shouldn't have any issues using whatever accessory rated for a Class 3 that you like. You have a 5/8ths diameter pin-hole there. So all of your 5/8ths pin-hole accessories, like your pin and clip, things like, that should slide right through. Nice large safety chain connection points here, so we shouldn't have a problem if we're going to be pulling a trailer, getting our safety chains connected.

The hitch is going to offer a 750 ton weight rating. That's the maximum downward force we can put here at the receiver tube opening. It's going to give us a 5,000 lb gross trailer weight rating. That's the total of our trailer and everything that we've got loaded up. Of course, we want to refer to the manual on this Sorento.

Make sure it can handle those loads, if not, we'll just go off whichever of those numbers are the lowest. A few measurements that'll be helpful in selecting your Ball Mount Bike Rack, or maybe Hitch Cargo Carrier, will be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening. It's about 12 and 3/4 of an inch. Then, from the center of our hitch pin-bolt to the outer most edge of our bumper, it's about 3 and 3/4s. To begin our install, we'll open the rear hatch. We'll pull out our floor coverings here and we're going to lower down the spare tire. What we're going to do is back the little cap out down here that's covering up our spare tire area.

You'll use your tire tool, or we're just going to use our wrench here, and go ahead and lower that down. We'll set this aside and we'll put it back in later. Now, we'll use a safety strap. Just come under the exhaust here, and give it a little bit of support. Now, we'll take off the three rubber isolators. We've got one here on the rear side of the tailpipe. We've got one catty-corner, up here on the front corner. Then there's going to be one right here, right on that main cross number. Now, we'll put a little spray lubricant on each one of the hangers, and then just kind of work it off. Sometimes you'll get them off by hand. If you got a little screwdriver or pry bar, you can just try to, kind of prying them off there. You'll see that's going to give us some little bit of room to work. We've got a rubber plug right here on the passenger side frame rail that we're going to remove. Then we'll have one in the same spot on the driver side. Now, we're going to take out the small cover that's right here. We're going to have five of the, kind of like screw-in, push-pin fasteners. Then there will be one, right up here on that front side. All right, we can just set that one aside. We'll be putting that back in as well. Now we can raise our hitch into position. It's going to be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to do this. It's a little bit heavy. We're going to line it up with our holes that go through our frame rack 00:03:42. We'll take one of the 7/16ths inch carriage bolts, push it through here on the passenger side. We'll do one of the 1/2 inch ones over here on the driver side and push it through. We'll allow that to support our hitch and allows to get the rest of our hardware in place and installed. Now, we'll take one of our M10 hex bolts here, put a conical tooth washer on it. We want the teeth to face towards the hitch and we can thread that into the existing weld nut that's under the frame. On the passenger side, we're going to do the same thing but this time we've got two of them. Then we'll place our 1/2 inch flange bolts on the 1/2 inch carriage bolts. We'll put the 7/16ths inch flange nuts on the 7/16ths inch carriage bolts. Now, we'll take just a quick look to be sure we have a hitch centered here. Then we can start snugging down all of our hardware. All right, now let's get everything torqued down to the specifications that we can find in our instructions. Now we get our exhaust put back into place. It's a good idea to spray your hangers down again. It's going to help them slide on a little bit easier. Most of the time, you can put these back on by hand. All right, now let's pull down our safety strap. We can get our appearance panel put back it. On the two areas, where our bolts were, we can just push those right up into place. We get our pushpin fasteners and put those back in. Now we can bring our spare tire back under and we'll get it put back in. We'll put our cover back on here and put back in any coverings we removed from the floor. Now that everything's put back where it belongs, that's going to complete the installation of the Curt Custom-Fit Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13195, on our 2016 Kia Sorento.
