How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Honda Odyssey


Today on our 2016 Honda Odyssey, we'll be taking a look at and installing the Curt trailer hitch receiver, which is a Class 2 with a 1-1/4" opening. Part number C12031. This is what the hitch looks like once it's installed on your vehicle. It's got the 1=1/4" by 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. It's got the reinforcement collar around it here. It's got this 1/2" hitch pinhole right there.

It's got this steel plate with holes in it for your safety chains. It's welded to the bottom side of the crossframe and receiver tube. IN the crossframe here, you can see that its got a nice black powder-coat finish on the whole thing to help with superior rust and corrosion protection. If you already have 1-1/4" accessories, that's going to be really good for what you've already got. This has a nice, easy installation.

There's no drilling or welding required. It features a 350 pound max tongue weight, and a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. You'll want to be sure to check your vehicle's owner's manual to see what your vehicle is rated for, and not to exceed that. With all non-trailer loads that are mounted to this hitch, it is required that you use stabilizing straps. The distance from the top edge of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 13-1/4", and the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the rear bumper, is 4-1/2". These measurements will help with selecting accessories, such as bike racks and cargo carriers. Let's go ahead and show you how to install it.

First thing we'll do under the vehicle is we're going to remove these three pushpin fasteners. You can take a flathead screwdriver and pop the center body of them down. Then you can take it out. It's going to be the same on all three of these. Then we'll come up here, use a 10mm socket, take that bolt out.

Once you've got that little bolt out of there, you can take a short Phillips head screwdriver and remove the screw that's right there. Once you've got that out of there, you'll be able to take your panel and pull it down out of the way. We're going to have to remove the two exhaust hangers that are here behind our rear axle. I'm going to take this and spray a little bit of penetrating oil on there. You can use a pry bar, it'll slide off of there. Then we'll move up to the other one, it's right here behind the cross-member. Same thing, spray a little bit on there. That'll allow it to hang just enough for you to be able to get your hitch up in there. Right up here we've got the weld nuts mounted into the frame rail that we're going to be putting our bolts into to mount our hitch up. Before we do that, we want to take a tubing brush, run that up through there, and make sure that those threads are clean so that they don't get damaged. Once I've done that, I'm going to put a little bit of lubricant up in those holes and then we'll do the same thing on the other side. Here's what we're going to be using to bolt these into place. We've got our bolts, along with our conical tooth washer. When we put them up into place, the little teeth that are on the one side, are going to go upwards towards the hitch. We've got two weld nuts here, and on this driver's side, we're also going to be using this hole right here, which we will be fishing a carriage bolt and spacer through here, to come out here as our third mounting location. Now, lets' take our fish wire, we'll take the threaded end, start it through the hole that we're going to be ending up at, and fishing it to come out our access hole. Once we've got that there, we can take our spacer, put it up onto it, take your carriage bolt, thread it in. Then you want to feed the washer up through the access hole first, then your carriage bolt, then you can pull it down into place. We'll leave this fish wire on here until we get the bolt started in the existing weld nuts. You want to grab a second set of hands, in order to help you put this up there. We'll take this fish wire, feed it through that's closest to towards the front of the vehicle. We can put our hitch up into place. We can get one of our bolts started, and run it up there hand tight, so the hitch will hold in place. Then we can grab out other bolt, and nut, and we can take this fish wire off the carriage bolt and get the nut started on it. Run that up hand tight as well. We'll want to make sure to get both our bolts on the other side started as well. Once you get all the fasteners started, take your 3/4" socket and get them snugged up. Then we can torque them to what's specified in the instruction manual. Now that our hitch is installed, don't forget to go back and hook up all your exhaust hangers. That's going to complete our look at the Curt trailer hitch receiver Class 2, with a 1-1/4" opening. The part number is C120321 on our 2015 Honda Odyssey.
