How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2015 Subaru Impreza

Speaker 1: Today on our 2015 Subaru Impreza, we're gonna be taking a look at showing you how to install the Draw-Tite classic fit trailer hitch receiver, part number DT-24959. So here's what our hitch is going to look like. The cross tube is going to be visible, and it's going to fit right below our bumper. It's a class one hitch, which means it's going to give us an inch and a quarter, by inch and a quarter receiver tube opening, and this is going to be great for some of those small bike racks or smaller cargo carriers.The way we're going to mount all of our accessories, is going to be through the hitch pin pull here on the side, and it is going to accept a standard half inch pin and clip. While these aren't included in our kit, you can pick them up here at using part number PC2.The safety chain connection points are going to be a loop style, welded to the bottom of the receiver tube. And as you can see, you're not going to have trouble getting most sized hooks on or off.

Our hitch is going to have a 200 pound tongue weight which is going to be the maximum downward force at the receiver tube. It's also going to have a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull and everything they have loaded the trailer.Now, with those numbers in mind, you always want to double check your Subaru's owner's manual and never exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight. I'd like to give you a few measurements and then I'll help you on deciding for accessories for your new hitch, such as a bike rack, or a cargo carrier. In the center of the hitch pin hole, to the outermost edge of the bumper, it's going to be right about three and a half inches. And that measurement's going to come in handy when looking at folding accessories, make sure you have enough clearance between the accessory itself so that it's not going to come in contact with the rear bumper.From the ground to the inside top edge of receiver tube opening, it's going to be just over 11 inches.

And at that height, I definitely would recommend a bike rack or a cargo carrier with a raised shank to give us a little bit more ground clearance. So now that we've seen what our hitch looks like, and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed.In order for us to get our hitch in place, we are going to have to lower our exhaust down. But before we lower it, I'm going to go ahead and take a strap and make sure that it's supported, and doesn't come down too far. So you just want to find a nice, sturdy spot and I'm going to tighten the strap up, and then we can start working on lowering the exhaust.Over on the passenger side, we're going to have two hangers. One towards the back of the bumper and then one towards the front of the muffler and if we move over the driver's side, we're going to have another rubber hanger holding it in place.

And then finally, if we come to the rear axle, there's going to be another one, and we're going to have to remove the rubber isolator off of the post. So I'm going to take some spray lubricant and I'm just going to spray it on the hanger. It should make it a little bit easier for that rubber isolator to come off.So, we'll spray down the rest of our hangers and start removing the rest of them. Once you have the last one removed, we're just going to slowly lower our exhaust down, til we get enough working room. Just make sure that strap is going to hold it, and keep it supported.

On the bottom of our frame, we're either going to have two or three plugs, and we're going to want to pull all those out. Basically, these are going come out with a flathead screwdriver and pry them out. We'll remove the other three on the other side as well.Now, underneath those plugs, we're going to have a large hole that's going to be towards the front of our Impreza, and then a couple smaller ones. The large hole towards the front is going to act as our access hole to get our hardware in place. So, before we start doing anything, we want to take one of our spacer blocks, and make sure that it'll fit inside the frame, as well as one of our carriage bolts, to make sure we can get it in. If you can't fit both of those pieces into the frame, you're going to enlarge this hole, just enough to where you can get this hardware in. And typically I suggest just using a file, and just filing down the edge until you have just enough room to slide this in place.In order to get our hardware in place we're going to take a fish wire, and we're going to take the end that has the coil on it, and we're going to feed it into the very rear hole and we're going to start feeding it forward, until it comes out the access hole towards the front. Now this may take a little bit of patience and just kind of turning and twisting the pull wire until you can get that coil to come out. But once we have the coiled end coming out, you want to make sure that that tail end doesn't go into the frame, so I'm just going to put a slight bend in there to keep it from going in.Take our spacer block, feed it over the coiled end of our wire and take one of our carriage bolts and thread it on the end. Then one piece at a time, we'll put our spacer block in, making sure it's all the way in the frame and we'll take our carriage bolt, feed it into the frame, and we're going to pull on our pull wire until the bolt drops through the spacer block and through the frame. Now the forward mounting hole's going to be just a little bit different.We're still going to use that pull wire, except this time we'll put our spacer block over the end of the wire and thread everything on before it goes into the frame. We'll feed our carriage bolts in, followed by our spacer block, then we're going to pull our wire so it comes right back down, through that block and through the frame. We'll repeat that for the other side as well.Now, there's one more spacer that's going to get sandwiched between our hitch and the frame itself. You're going to put this towards the front of your car, so you want to make sure it's the farthest away from the receiver tube. So I'm just going to put it on there, and I'm just going to take a piece of tape, just so that when I go to lift my hitch up, it won't be moving around too much. You're going to want to put one of those spacers on each side.So, we're going to lift our hitch up into position. You want to make sure you pull the pull wires through and be careful not to push the hardware back into the frame. Once we have our hitch into position and the hardware coming through, we're going to take a flat washer, followed by a lock washer. Once you have all your hardware in place, you're going to take an 11/16th socket and snug it all down.Then we'll come back with that same socket and a torque wrench and we're going to torque all of our hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. With the hitch torqued down, I'm going to spray a little bit more lubricant on those hangers, lift my exhaust back up and slide the rubber isolator back onto that metal post. Then we can remove the strap.And that'll finish up your look at the Draw tight, Class one customer fit trailer hitch receiver, part number DT-24959 on our 2015 Subaru Impreza.
