How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Today, on our 2014 Volkswagen Passat, well be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11234. Now here is what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hold to the outermost edge of the bumper is approximately 4 inches. From the top of opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 10-1/2 inches. Now lets go ahead and install our hitch. Were going to begin here underneath the rear fascia.

Were going to need to remove three Torx head screws as well as their clips. Next, were going to go ahead and open up the trunk. Well need to go ahead and remove some of the interior portion of the trunk as well as the spare tire and the jack that sits here in this area. Next, we are going to need to remove the two rear drain plugs here in the trunk pan, one here and the other one over there. Now to remove the plugs, well simply take a flat-head screwdriver and loosen up the edge and then well take a pair of pliers and gently pull them out.

Next, were going to go ahead and mark out the area here on the lower fascia that well need to trim out. Well go ahead and take our tape measure and measure out the area that will need to be trimmed. Then, well go ahead and use our marker and mark out the four corners. Well be removing this area right here. Were going to be using a rotary tool to trim out our area. We can use a cutoff wheel or even a razor knife to trim out the area.

Next, we are going to go ahead and unclip the fascia here on the passenger side. Next, we are going to go ahead and take the nut plates. Well slide one on each side above the rear bumper structure here. Well slide it up in, out like that. Well then go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side.

Next, we are going to go ahead and use some Loctite RTV 598 Silicone sealant, part number LT37467. We are going to use the sealant to go around the hole here that we pulled the rubber plug out of. Well do that for both sides. Then go ahead and drop both of the flat plates into position. Then put our inch carriage bolt in place. Now its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you put the hitch up into position. Now that we have the hitch up into place, well go ahead and install the inch flange nuts here on the two center locations just to help support the hitch. Well go ahead and just put them on loosely for now. Well go ahead and take our long inch bolt here with our conical tooth washer making sure that the teeth will face towards the hitch. Go ahead and slide that into position. Go ahead and feed it up here from the underside binding it up with the nut plate that is up top already. Now, well go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side. Now that we have all of our hardware loosely installed, well go ahead and tighten everything down. Then well torque it to the manufacturers specifications. Now that our hardware has been torqued on, well go ahead and reinstall everything. Well only be reinstalling two of these three tabs because the center one was removed when we had to trim the fascia. That will do it for our installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11234 on our 2014 Volkswagen Passat. .
