How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Today, in this 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited, we're going to install part number C13153 from Curt. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on the Santa Fe. Next, we'll use the measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be about 16". From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper will be about 4". Now we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. First thing we need to do is go ahead and get underneath the vehicle. We'll go ahead and remove the panel that's at the bottom of the bumper and in the center.

To remove this panel, there are a couple of plastic fasteners, one on each side, that we have to remove, and then there's another clip on each side that we push in and pull it down to release it. At this point, we can actually see the spare tire. It'd be a good idea to loosen it up maybe a few turns and push it as far forward as possible. That way it will give you as much room to put the hitch into place. Now, I'll go ahead and show you where the hitch mounts up. Looking at the driver's side, we've got thread holes here and here at the bottom of the frame and then these holes that go all the way through the side of the frame. With our alignment pin in the way, you can either cut it off with a cutting wheel or you could probably bend it out of the way. We're just going to use a long socket, a deep well socket with an extension, and we'll just pull it out of the way.

If you want, when we're done, you can use the same technique to push it back up in place. This is going to be identical on the passenger side. Next, we need to go ahead and get our threads cleaned out here. Now, it's a new vehicle but you've still got some undercoat that could be inside there. We're going to spray it down with some lubricant and then you can use a tube brush to clean out the threads. We're using part number 814092.

I took mine and cut the handle off and put it in a drill. Then we'll go ahead and take one of our hitch bolts and try it out. We're good with this one. We'll go out and clean out the remaining threads. It might be a good idea to try out the bolts, to make sure your inside of the frame is clear as well. Before we install our hitch, we'll go ahead and show you how the hardware will work. On the bolts that go through the frame, or the carriage bolt, will go from the inside to the outside with a flange nut on the outside of the frame.

On the bottom fasteners, we'll get the small metric bolt and a conical tooth washer and we'll make sure that the teeth on conical tooth washer always face towards the hitch. This is going to be here and here and all four bolts will be the same on both sides. With an extra set of hands, we'll go ahead and take the hitch, put it up and we'll put the long carriage bolts and use those to help hold the hitch in the frame. With that hardware installed, we'll go ahead and install the hitch bolts. This is why we leave the hardware loose, so we can move the hitch around to line up the holes. At this point, we'll go ahead and torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. Now our hitch is fully installed. Let's go ahead and try out the cover for the bumper. It looks like it fits. I think it presses against the hitch just a little bit, so there's going to be some pressure on here. It definitely won't go anywhere once you put the screws back in at the bottom. With that, that'll finish it for our install of part number C13153 from Curt on our 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited. .

I'm assuming this is good for the XL version as well?
