How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Honda Fit

Today, on this 2012 Honda Fit, we are going to install part number 11064 from Curt. This is what the hitch looks like once installed on a car. Next, we'll go ahead and give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the bumper is going to be three-and-a-quarter inches. From top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be nine-and-a-half inches. We'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed.

First off, we're going to reverse this wire, a half-inch carriage bolt and this spacer into the access hole, into the bumper beam mount on the passenger side. We'll go ahead and bend the handle nuts and insert them to the trunk pin mount located at the bottom of the spare tire well. With this hardware installed, we'll go ahead and raise the hitch in position, and we'll go ahead and tie it down finger tight only. On the driver side, there's a plastic cover that will loosen up to get out of way so it can we can get a straight shot at drilling out the hole. We'll use a hitch as a template to mark the center of a hole on the driver's side arm.

We'll go ahead and lower the hitch and then drill out the hole. With the final hole sides drilled out, we'll go ahead, take the block, we'll divide it in half and put a mark in it, and then we'll trace around it to give you an idea how much we need to cut out for the block. We'll be using a rotary tool with a carbide bit to accomplish this. With the sheet metal carved away, we can go ahead and install out hardware. We'll do the same reverse pull technique as before.

Then we go ahead and reinstall the hitch and tighten down all of the fasteners, and then torque all the fasteners down as specified in the instructions. Once we put the hitch up for the last time, we'll make sure we install spacers between the frame and the hitch. With all the hardware tightened down, we'll go ahead and reinstall the panel that was loosened earlier on the driver's side. With that, that will finish it for our install of part number 11064 from Curt on our 2012 Honda Fit.
