How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2011 Ford Escape

Today on this 2011 Ford Escape were going to install part number 12060 from Curt. Now this is what the hitch looks like when its installed on a vehicle. Next well give you some measurements thatll help you out when selecting some accessories such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be 16 1/4 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper will be about 1 inches. Now well go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed.

Well start off our install by installing the hardware for a hitch. Well pull carriage bolts and square whole spacers through the hole in the bottom of the frame. Now the hole were going to use will be the third one back counting from the bumper going forward. Well take our bolt leader that comes with the kit push it through the hole were going to use and out through the end of the frame. Well thread on our block and then our bolt.

Well pull it all the way back through and well repeat on the other side. Currently right now were looking at the drivers side. At this point we can go ahead and start installing the hitch on tow bolts we just installed. Its a good idea to have an extra set of hands to help lift the hitch up in position. Once the hitch is in place well add a conical tooth washer and nut.

Make sure the teeth on the conical tooth washer are going up towards the hitch. Now on the passenger side of the vehicle well have to add an additional block and itll go between the frame rail and the hitch. Now we can go ahead and install the rest of the hardware. Well use the same block and bolts. Well take out bolt leader, run it through the holes and out the same access hole and repeat the same process.

Were done with the drivers side well repeat the same process over on the passenger side. Now some vehicles muffler maybe covering up the bolt that goes toward the front on the passenger side. If this is so you can just go ahead and spray down on the rubber muffler hanger with some lubricant and slide it off. Then you can move it out of the way and tighten up the bolt. With all our hardware installed we can go ahead and tighten down the bolts then torque them down as specified in the instructions. With all our hardware tightened down we can go ahead and reinstall the muffler hanger if needed. Thatll finish it for our install; there you have it for part number 12060 from Curt, on our 2011 Ford Escape.
