How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2010 Toyota RAV4

Today on our 2010 Toyota RAV4 we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Draw Tite Max Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, Class 3 part number 75235. A couple of nice features about this hitch, it's a nice round tube design with the high gloss black powdered coat finish. It's going to help protect against corrosion and rust. It's a 2 inch receiver and this one has a double pin so you can use your J pin stabilization devices. It also comes with an en-thatching point so you can mount your wiring for your trailers. It's got a nice flat steel safety chain hooks that are really large diameter so you can put your nice big hooks through there and you'll have no problems. This hitch is fully welded and it's a bolt on design.

There's no modifications to your vehicle other than removing your tow hook to put it in place and then your tow hook will go right back in the area it came out of. This hitch is designed for towing 4,500 pounds of trailer weight which is the amount pulling back on it. It's set up for 675 pounds of tongue weight which is a downward pressure on your receiver. Now we'll give you some measurements to help you in picking out your accessories such as a bike rack, a cargo carrier, or a trailer ball. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is about 13 inches.

From the center of the hitch pin to the end of the vehicle is about 7 inches. Now let's go ahead and show you how to install it. Now our first step's going to be to drop our exhaust. We're going to spray up the grommets, got one in the very back here and one in the middle. We've got a safety strap, it stops the exhaust from coming all the way down place it underneath, pull it taut and then we'll just pry the grommets loose from the exhaust. I'm going to loosen up the safety strap and let the exhaust down so we have access to get to our hitch.

After we've dropped our exhaust we're going to go ahead and remove this tow hook from the factory it's going to be reinstalled on the hitch with some new bolts. We'll set that aside. Now we're going to clean out the factory weld nuts just to make sure there's no dirt and debris and rust built in there. We're going to use a nylon tube brush available on our website part number 814092. Clean out the holes, there's 3 on the driver's side and 2 on the passenger's side we're going to get. Once we have those cleaned out, we're going to take one of the old bolts that came off the tow hook.

We're just going to run it into the weld nut to make sure it's going to thread in nice and easy when you're putting your hitch in. We'll repeat that on all the holes. Now we'll go ahead and raise our hitch up into place. We're going to get a second set of hands to help us out with that. We'll take our 12 millimeter bolt and our conical tooth washer, teeth side up and we'll attach our hitch to the frame. Now we can re-install that tow hook that we removed previously. You're going to have 3 bolts on the driver's side and only 2 on the passenger side. They're oval shaped, so you want to kind of center up your hitch under the openings and then we'll temporarily tighten it up. Now we'll go ahead and torque them to the torque spec that's listed in your instructions. We'll do the same thing on the driver's side. Once we have them all torqued, you can see we still have use of our factory tow hook. Now we're ready to put our exhaust back into position and we can remove our strap. Now we're ready to hitch up and tow something. That's going to do it for our look at and install of the Draw Tite Max Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, Class 3 part number 75235 on our 2014 Toyota RAV4.
