How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Today on this 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan, we're going to install part number 90191, from Hidden Hitch. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on the Tiguan. Next, we'll give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories, such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be about 15 1/2". From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper will be about 3 7/8". Now we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. First thing we need to do is go ahead and get the vehicle ready. We need to locate an existing grooved area at the bottom of the fascia. We don't have to cut out all of it, just enough for a hitch. This is the cut-out for the hitch.

We're actually going to measure out 6 1/2". Made a mark. Our hitch is small enough, we'll use it for a straight edge. Now, we'll just use a utility knife and just work our way all the way around. Go ahead and score this line.

There you go. If you take a look up underneath here, you'll see four holes. That's what the hitch will bolt into. Even though the threader holes have been covered up for a while, there's still a chance that dirt and debris got inside there, so we're going to spray them down with some lubricant and use a tube brush to help clean them out. The tube brush will be part number 814092. I cut the handle off of mine and put it in a drill. Makes things go a lot faster.

It'd be a good idea to go ahead and test it with a bolt. It's a good feel, so you know where the threads are at. Here's our hitch bolt we had earlier, and we also added a conical tooth washer which comes with the kit. We'll make sure the teeth always face toward the hitch. We'll just go ahead and continue on installing the rest of our hardware. With all our hardware installed, we'll go ahead and snug down the bolts, then we'll torque them down as specified in the instructions. Now we'll go ahead and torque the bolts down as specified. Okay.

In just those few steps, our hitch is installed and ready to go. Now finish it for part number 90191, from Hidden Hitch, on our 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan. .
