How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2006 Honda Pilot

All right, today on this 2006 Honda Pilot, we're going to install part number 13328 from Curt. All right, this is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on the vehicle. Next, we'll give you some measurements that will help you out when selecting some accessories, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From top of receiver opening down to the ground will be about 18". And from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper will be about 4". Now I'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed.

All right, first thing we need to do is go ahead and remove the tie-down hook on the driver's side. This will not be reinstalled. There will be three bolts we have to remove. Now these three holes will also be the locations where the hitch mounts up. All right, next we'll go ahead and go to the mount center behind the bumper structure.

There will be two threaded holes right in front of the spare tire. We're going to spray down the threads with some lubricant, and then use a tube brush to go ahead and clean out the threads. The tube brush is part number 814092. We'll clean it out pretty good, and then we'll go ahead and use one of the bolts from the hitch to make sure we can thread them in. Once those two are done, we'll go ahead and go over to the other side of the vehicle on the passenger side, and clean out the existing threaded holes there.

Once again we'll go ahead and spray them down with some lubricant and use a tube brush on them to help clean them out. And then, we'll test them with the bolts. With all the holes cleaned out, we can go ahead and start installing the hitch. First off, we'll show you how the hardware works with the hitch. Now when you install conical tooth washers, you want to make sure the teeth on the washer always face up towards the hitch.

Okay, with an extra set of hands, we'll go ahead and lift the hitch up in position. There's a small tab in the center of the hitch that will go behind the bumper structure and line up with the holes behind it. And then we'll line up the hitch with the holes in the bottom of the frame. Now you also want to note that on the passenger side there's a heat shield over the exhaust. You may have to push that towards the exhaust to get a little more working room so you can slide the hitch over to the driver's side. Then we'll start our hardware. We'll get one on both sides to help secure it. Then we'll install the rest of the fasteners. Once all the fasteners are loosely installed, we'll go ahead and tighten them down, and then torque the bolts down, as specified in the instructions. Okay, and with that, that will finish it for our install of part number 13328 from Curt on our 2006 Honda Pilot.
