How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2006 Honda Odyssey

Today on our 2006 Honda Odyssey we'll be installing Hidden Hitch, part number 87479. This is what our hitch will look like once it's installed. Next we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 5-1/2" from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 12". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. now we'll go ahead with installation. Our first step will be to remove the rear exhaust hanger so that we can move the tailpipe aside, gaining access to the frame rail on the passenger side.

To remove the exhaust hanger we'll simply spray it down with some spray lubricant and use our pry bar to push the rubber isolator off the tailpipe hanger. Now that we have access to both frame rails we can go ahead and point out the attachment points. There are a total of three weld nuts on each side. Starting from just behind the rear axle is our forward weld nut, and then our center, and rear. Each one of these weld nuts will need to be cleaned out prior to installation.

To clean them out we'll use a little spray lubricant and a 1/2" nylon tube brush, part number 814092. Note, over time it will build up with rust, dust, dirt, and debris, which can make it hard to threat on the new fasteners. In extreme cases it may be necessary to use a thread tap to clean out the weld nuts. Quick tech tip: I recommend you go ahead and check the weld nut with one of the new 12mm fasteners before attempting to install the hitch. Now with all the weld nuts cleaned out we're ready to go ahead and put our hitch in place. Again, we'll be using the new 12mm fastener along with a conical tooth washer - the teeth of the washer will face the hitch - and a spacer block that will get sandwiched between the hitch and the frame.

Now that we're ready to put our hitch in place it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your fasteners. Now with all six fasteners installed finger tight we can go ahead and run them down. Next we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. With our hitch installed and secured we'll go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. That will complete the install of our Hidden Hitch, part number 87479, on our 2006 Honda Odyssey.
