How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2006 Dodge Magnum

Today on our 2006 Dodge Magnum well be installing Curt Hitch part number 13465. This is what our hitch will look like once its installed; next well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 7 inches; from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 10 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. Now lets go ahead with the installation.First, before we can install the hitch, well need to lower the exhaust. To do this safely, well put a safety strap underneath it so we can control how far and fast the exhaust will come down.

There are a total of six hangers, three on each side that will need to be removed. One way to remove them is with some spray lubricant on each of the rubber isolators and a pair of pliers or a pry bar; however, in this case, well only do this procedure on the forward two exhaust hangers. For the rear forward exhaust hangers, well just simply remove the bolt securing the metal hanger to the frame. Keep in mind that this vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket exhaust and therefore the hangers at the rearest of the vehicle have been slightly altered. Before we remove the hangers on the passenger side, well also remove the ground strap securing it.

Now with the ground strap out of the way, lets go ahead and start removing the exhaust hangers. Now with all the hangers removed, we can go ahead and use the safety strap to lower the exhaust. As you can see, this will give us plenty of working room to access the frame. Weve got a total of six attachment points. Here on the driver side starting at the front, theres already a pre-drilled hole where well be installing the carriage bolt and block then the center and rear attachment points will be the weld nuts here in the frame.

Over here at the passenger side, our forward and center attachment points are pre-drilled holes where well be inserting carriage bolts and blocks and our rear attachment point will be the weld nut and the frame.Next, lets go ahead and clean out the weld nuts. This will make it easier to install our hardware. To clean them out, well use a little spray lubricant and a -inch nylon tube brush part number 814092. Keep in mind, overtime these weld nuts will build up with dust, dirt and debris and can make it extremely difficult to install the new hardware. In extreme cases, it may be necessary to get a tap to run through the threads.

Now with the weld nuts cleaned out, were ready to go ahead and start installing the carriage bolts and blocks into the frame.Using our pull wire, well go through the attachment point and out the access hole here on the driver side; well slide on our block and then thread on our bolt and pull them both up into the frame. Now well go ahead and remove the bolt leader and repeat the same process for the center and forward attachment points on the passenger side. Now with all our hardware into the frame, its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch up while you install your fasteners. For the weld nuts, well be using the -inch bolt and conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. Well be installing the flange nut on the front bolt that you had the fish wire into the frame. Now with all our fasteners secured finger tight, we can go ahead and run them down. Now with all our hardware tightened down, we can go ahead and torque each fasteners specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with the hitch secured, well go ahead and reinstall the exhaust and ground strap. And thatll will complete the installation of our Curt Hitch part number 13465 on our 2006 Dodge Magnum.
