How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2005 Honda Pilot

Today on our 2005 Honda Pilot we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Hitch part number 75599. Here's what our hitch will look like once it's installed. We'll give you a few measurements to help you choose a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is 4". From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 17". To begin our install we'll first need to remove the tow hook on the driver side of our Pilot. We'll remove the three fasteners that secure the hook to the frame. Then we'll need to lower the exhaust from the passenger side.

For safety we'll attach a safety strap and gradually lower the exhaust out of the way. We'll need to remove the three rubber isolators that secure the exhaust to the metal hangers. To do this we'll use some spray lubricant and spray each hanger which will make it easier to remove the isolator with a pry bar or pliers. With those removed we'll use our safety strap to safely lower the weight of the exhaust. Now we'll show you the attachment points. For this hitch we'll have a total of six attachment points three on each side.

These attachment points will be weld nuts built into the frame by the manufacturer. On the passenger side we'll again use some spray lubricant as well as a 1/2" nylon tube brush part number 814092, to clean out the rust, dust, dirt and debris that will build up over time. Once we have the weld nut cleaned out we'll try rethreading one of the new fasteners to make sure they go nice and easily. Next well move over to the driver side attachment points. These will be the weld nuts that the manufacturer used to hold the tow hook and they will mirror the passenger side. Since they we're not exposed to the elements they don't need to be cleaned out.

We'll be using the new 12mm bolt as well as 1/2" conical tooth washer. The teeth to the washer will face the hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners. We'll go around the heat shield on the passenger side. Once you line up the hitch with the weld nuts, then go ahead and run the fasteners in. We'll install them hand tight until they're all in place.

With all our fasteners installed, we'll tighten them down. Once they're tightened down we'll torque them to the manufacturer's specification as indicated in the instructions. To finish up we'll reinstall the exhaust with the rubber isolators and remove the safety strap. That'll complete our install of the Draw-Tite Hitch part number 75599 on our 2005 Honda Pilot. .
