How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2005 Honda Odyssey

Today on our 2005 Honda Odyssey, well be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver in a Class III with a 2 Inch Opening, part number C13068. Heres what the hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now well go ahead and give you a couple measurements to helping you choose some accessories for your hitch such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is approximately 3 inches. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 13 inches. Now, lets go ahead and install our hitch. To begin with, well go ahead and install our safety strap.

This will support the exhaust once we remove 2 exhaust hangers so we can gain access to our weld nuts on the passengers side. Now that our safety straps in place, well go ahead and use a little spray lubricant and a pry bar to work the 2 exhaust hangers off. Once the exhaust hangers are loose, we can go ahead and lower the exhaust out enough to give us a little bit more access to our 2 weld nuts on the passengers side. Well be using a total of 4 weld nuts; 2 weld nuts on each side, and one carriage bolt and spacing block that will be fish wired in on the drivers side. Well go ahead and clean the weld nuts out using a little spray lubricant and a half-inch nylon tube brush, which is part number 814092. Once we have all 4 of the weld nuts cleaned out, now we can go ahead and use our fish wire to put our carriage bolt and spacer block into place.

Well go ahead and put the coiled end of the fish wire into the hole where well be pulling the carriage bolt back out of and then come out our access point. Once we have the fish wire pulled out the access point, well go ahead and slide this spacer block on and then well thread the carriage bolt onto that. Well then go ahead and put both pieces up into the access hole and pull them out through the mounting location. You can then go ahead and take the fish wire off. Now the other 4 locations; well be using a bolt with a conical tooth washer, making sure that the teeth on the conical tooth washer are facing the hitch. Now were ready to go ahead and put our hitch up into place.

If you rest the hitch up on the exhaust on the passengers side, you can go ahead and insert one bolt and conical tooth washer in on the drivers side to hold this side of the hitch. Once you have that up, well then go ahead and go over to the passengers side and install our hardware over there. Again, on the passengers side, its just bolts with conical tooth washers. Once we have the hardware installed all on the passengers side, well go back over to the drivers side and put the other bolt and conical tooth washer in place as well as putting the flange nut on the carriage bolt. Now that all the hardwares been loosely installed, well go ahead and center up the hitch and then tighten it down, followed by torquing it to the manufacturers specification. Once we have all the hardware torqued, we can go ahead and put the 2 rubber exhaust hangers back in place and remove our safety strap, and with that, that will conclude our installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver in a Class III with a 2 Inch Opening, part number C13068, on our 2005 Honda Odyssey.
