How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today were working on a 2002 Jeep grand Cherokee. Were going to install Curt hitch part number 13051. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch such as a draw bar, bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most point of the bumper, is 6 and inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 15 and inches. Now, lets go ahead with the installation.We have a total of 6 fastening points, 3 on each side.

Our first step is to remove the manufacturers fasteners. Now we go over to the passenger side and remove the same 2 forward fasteners. Our inner most fastener on the passenger side, you will notice it does not have the bracket support, it does however have the well nut and the frame but over time that well nut is going to build up with dirt, dust and debris, so youre going to want to clean it out before you try and install your hitch. Im going to use some spray lubricant and a half inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092. I even recommend to go and take one of your new fasteners and thread it into the hole before you try and install your hitch.

On the passenger side, well need to insert a block to make up for the space that the bracket takes up on the drivers side. To make it easier on installation, Im going to take some electrical tape and tape it to the hitch in place. Now, we wont have to fight it once we get our hitch up into position. Its a good time to get an extra set of hands to put in place. Using our 12mm bolts and our conical tooth washer with the teeth of our washer facing the hitch, with all of our fasteners installed, we can go ahead and tighten it down.

With all of our fasteners tightened down, we can go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. With all our fasteners torqued to specifications, that completes the installation of our Curt hitch part number 13051 on a 2002 jeep grand Cherokee.
