How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2001 Toyota RAV4

Today on our 2001 Toyota Rav4 we're going to be installing the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 60938. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. We'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. The draw bar and pin and clip are included with this hitch. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground, we have 15 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the spare tire carrier on this vehicle, we have about 10 inches. Now let's go ahead and install our hitch.

Before we begin our installation, let's go over the tools that you'll need to install this hitch. You'll need a ratchet, a long extension is helpful, you'll need a 17mm socket, a 19mm socket, a torque wrench, there's one particular location that a 17mm wrench may be helpful and, to speed things up a little bit, we're going to go ahead and use the impact gun here. Let's begin our installation by pointing out our mounting locations. We'll begin over here on the driver's side. There's two mounting locations, there's one here and there's one here. We will need to remove the tow hook and the hardware that's securing it to the frame for now, and they will not be reinstalled.

Over here on the passenger side, we'll be using right here and right here. Next we're going to remove the hardware and the tow hook from both the driver and the passenger side. The hardware we're going to be using to install our hitch will the same at all four mounting locations. We'll be using a 12mm bolt and a conical tooth washer, making sure that the teeth face towards the hitch when installed. Next we're ready to raise our hitch up into position, where we'll install all the hardware just hand-tight for now. Once our hitch is secured, we can go ahead and tighten everything down and then torque it to the manufacturer's specification. That'll do it for the installation of the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 60938 on our 2001 Toyota Rav4. .
