How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 1999 Jeep Wrangler

Today on our 1999 Jeep Wrangler, we will be installing a hidden hitch part number 87431. This is what our hitch will look like once it's installed. Next, we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of rear mono spare tire is 6 and a half inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 15 and three-quarter inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a draw bar, a bike rack or cargo carrier.

Now, let's go ahead with installation. Before we begin with our install, quick tech-tip: you can lower the exhaust by removing the rubber isolator behind the passenger's side tire. This will allow you more access to the frame bolt that will really be removed. Now, we'll go ahead and remove the frame bolt on the passenger's side and the driver's side. These will be two of our attachment points.

The other two attachments points will be on the pre-drilled holes on the side of the frame. Quick tech-tip, maybe necessary - just ring these holes out on the side of the frame so that you haven't tried where it'll fit through. As there are multiple fasteners in your install kit, I recommend a test fit, the new hardware before attempting to install it. Now, we are ready to go ahead and install our hitch. It maybe easier to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch in place while you install your weldnut fasteners.

We'll be using the 12mm bolts along with the half-inch conical tooth washer, with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. Now with the weldnut fasteners holding the hitch in place, we'll move to the side fasteners. For these, use the handle nuts which you can bend as necessary to get into the hole and up to your attachment point and the half-inch bolt along with the split-lock washer. We'll go ahead and install these now. Keeping in mind, each step we do here to one side,we repeat on the opposite side.

Now with all 4 attachment points in place, we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Once it has completed, we can go ahead and torque the specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with all our fasteners torqued to specifications, we're gonna go back to our handle nuts and just juse a pair of tin snips to cut off the excess that's sticking out of the frame. And that'll complete the install of our hidden hitch part number 87431 on our 1999 Jeep Wrangler.
