How to Install a TrailerMate Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles on a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

All right. Today on this 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, we're going to install Part Number TM780072. This is from TrailerMate. This is our Tow Bar Wiring Kit. Okay. First thing we're going to do is go to the back of your vehicle, we'll open the hatch and we're going to remove the two tail lights.

There are two small plastic caps on each tail light that we have to remove and then we'll go ahead and unbolt the tail light. We'll go ahead and pull the tail lights straight back and kind of rock it to the side until we can release it from the vehicle. All right. Now, we'll go ahead and disconnect the wire harness. We'll push down a small tab on top and then pull it apart and then we'll set the tail light aside.

(Repeat on Passenger Side) Now, we can go ahead and start installing the wire harness. We'll take a 4-pole in first and we're going to run that through below the tail light behind the bumper cover and out the bottom. We'll also do that with the T connector with the green wire. We'll run that down through as well. Now, the T connector with the yellow wire, we'll keep up by the tail lights.

Once we have both wires run through the bottom, we'll go ahead and connect our T connectors to the factory wire harness behind the tail light. Disconnect the T connector with the yellow wire and then we'll take the white wire with a ring terminal and then we'll attach it to a sheet metal behind the tail light. We'll use a self-tapping screw to attach it then we can go ahead and re-install the tail light. Next, we'll take a piece of airline tubing, this could be an easy piece of wire as well, we'll going to run up behind the bumper cover on the passenger side to help pull up the wire. We'll go ahead and take our wire, run it across, we'll route it behind supports for the bumper cover and then tape it to our airline tubing that we'll use to pull it up.

Okay. Now, our kit also comes with an attachment that has adhesive backing. We'll actually use that to help support the wire. We'll go ahead and thread a zip tie through it and then run our cable through it and the synched it down tight. We'll also add a couple more of zip ties at each end to help secure the wire. All right. Now, we'll go ahead and pull the wire harness back up through the passenger side tail light area. We'll connect it to a factory wire harness behind the tail light and then we'll go ahead and connect it to the tail light itself and re-install the tail light. All right. Now, we'll go ahead and continue on with our 4-pole wire harness underneath the vehicle. There's a small wire harness right behind the exhaust, we're going to go ahead and follow that with our 4-pole wire harness. We'll go follow it along and run it over the suspension in the back. Then we'll go ahead and start continue running alongside of the frame, we'll end up towards the front of the vehicle, and we'll use some zip ties to help attach it to some openings in the frame. All right. Now, we'll have to take a wire and run it underneath the radiator shroud and back up to the opening in the front of the vehicle beside the license plate on the driver's side. Okay. We'll go ahead and pull it out so we have some working room. Now, we'll go ahead and start installing our bracket to help hold the 4-pole in place. Now, the bumper cover doesn't have much to attach to, so we're going to use a separate part to attach to the base plate. Part Number we're going to use is 18136. We're going to take this bracket that we're going to attach to the 4-pole bracket using the provided hardware. Then we'll go ahead and take the assembly, we'll slip it to the opening in the bumper cover, we'll route it underneath the base plate. Now, we can install the clamp. We'll route it around the base plate and through the bracket, we'll pull the shroud down, so we can go ahead and get access to the clamp and tighten it down. Okay. Looks like everything is installed now. Let's go ahead and give it a test. First off, we'll go ahead and try the left turn signal. All right. It's good. Now, we'll go ahead and try the right turn signal. Okay. Now, we'll go ahead and turn our running lights signal. All right. Looks like everything works. All right. With that, that'll finish it for our install of Part Number TM780072 on our 2013 Chevrolet Equinox. .
