Review of the Thule Ladder Racks on a 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Ford F250 Super Duty we're going to be test fitting the Thule X400 Pro adjustable height truck bed ladder rack, part number TH500XT. These also come in black. The Thule Exporter Pro helps solve the problem of hauling your ladders, your lumber or even your kayaks from one place to the next, but it also solves another problem. Since it has an adjustable height on all the arms, you can prevent any contact with the cab of your truck. Other reasons to use this ladder rack in its highest position, like you see here, is for those longer loads, such as the ladder. You can also use it in conjunction with a roof rack system that you already have installed on your truck, as well.

By loosening out the dials here on all of the legs, and lowering it down to whatever desired location, let's say a lower position such as here, that's going to make it easier to load up some of those accessories, but also it's going to help out with aerodynamics while you drive as well, and make it a little bit quieter. To help make adjustments easier, there is a numbering system on the inside to keep it accurate.Because of its adjustable ability, it does bring down the carrying capacity a little bit to 450 pounds, while most other ladder racks that are stationary are going to have anywhere between 500 - 800 pounds carrying capacity. It does have these adjustable stoppers here on either side to help keep your load in place, but also serve as a tie-down point for your straps. Now, this does not come with straps to secure your load. These are sold separately.

You can find them on www.etrailer.com. How these adjusters move back and forth, you loosen the knob here, and it goes back and forth on a T-track, similar to the one you see on the bottom here. Both bars that the ladder will sit on have an aerodynamic shape to them, which will also cut down the wind noise and drag. In addition to being adjustable height wise, it can also be adjustable side-to-side to accommodate varying truck bed widths. Our final feature is going to be the ladder rack's ability to lock. It comes with two locks.

We have one installed here at the rear and one at the front. This is to help prevent theft of your ladder rack once it's installed. It does come with two keys that are keyed alike. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the Exporter Pro, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. We have our ladder rack closest to the cab of the truck already installed, we have our rear ones set in place. We already made our adjustments for the truck bed width, so let's go ahead and show you how it clamps on.

Before we put our rear ladder rack into place, we set down these rubber shims here, and they're going to sit between the ladder rack and the truck bed, itself. Now, it does help protect the bed rails of your truck once you install these, and so our next step is we're going to take our clamps and put those in place. Here are the clamps you're going to be using for the installation, and pretty much they're all just plain old C-clamps. You're going to have these metal brackets that sit on top of the screw, like so, as it gets tightened down to the truck bed rail. Now, there's a whole bunch of ways you can go about doing this. The way we like to do, we'll start a little farther back here, and just kind of slide it into position. We'll do this with the other one as well. Now, something to note at this point is you want to make sure the spacing is right. You'll find this in the instructions how far they expect you to have these two apart. You just don't want to go below 3 inches from center to center. We'll first hand-tighten our clamps into place, and then finish by tightening it up with a ratchet with a 7/32 bit on the end of it. Our final step, we'll put our lock into place by just sliding that in, lock it into place, and now we can load up our ladder and hit the road. There you have it for the Thule Exporter Pro adjustable height truck bed ladder rack on our 2018 Ford F250 Super Duty.
