Review of the Thule Compass Kayak and SUP Carrier on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Colin: Hey everyone, I'm Colin here at etrailer. Today we have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and we're going to do a test fit of the Thule Compass Standup Paddleboard and Kayak Carrier. Now, this carrier is going to mount to the roof rack of your vehicle. It allows you to carry either two kayaks, one kayak or two paddle boards on top of your roof to get it to your destination. It's got a lot of versatility. It's going to be able to carry your kayak in a variety of ways. We have in our J-hook style right now.

But we can also carry it in the stacker position and get another kayak on the other side of the carrier. Or we can put that arm down and carry it in the saddle position, if you want more surface area for that one kayak you might be carrying. The carrier is going to come with all the straps and balance inaudible 00:00:42 and tie downs that you would need to transport up to two kayaks, or two paddle boards. Now we have two of our straps secured right now, it's going to be cam buckles with a rubber grommet over them. It's going to help protect your kayak and your vehicle from any type of scratches or abrasions that could occur when securing it.We are going to have bow and stern tie-downs for the front and rear of our kayak or paddleboard. That's just going to help prevent any type of lift from occurring on our watercraft while we're traveling.

On both sides of the carrier, we're going to have these nice, thick rubber saddles. That's going to help protect your kayak or stand-up paddleboard from any type of scratches or abrasions while you're traveling. Now we'll go ahead and take our kayak off so we can take a closer look at the rack and show you the different configurations. Now we have a good look at our upright post right here. Like I said, we have it in the J-style configuration right now. If we want to switch it, all we got to do is loosen up this hand knob. Once you get it pretty loss, you can just go ahead and get it all the way back, because it will stop itself from coming off of the threads.

From there, we can adjust it up in the stacker position. We can get two kayaks, one on each side and secure it just like you would for a J-style.If you want it on the other side of your vehicle, you can pull that J-hook this way and get it secured, or you could even just pull it all the way down for a saddle-style carrier. You're going to be able to put a kayak up here with the hull on top of the carrier. You can see the divot right here is going to match the contours of the hull and also up top right here, you can get some stand-up paddle boards as well and get those secure. Just got a lot of versatility.

It is going to have a weight limit of 130 pounds, if you're hauling multiple watercraft. But if you're only hauling one kayak or one paddleboard, that'll be a weight limit of 75 pounds.Once you have it in the position you need, make sure you tighten up that bolt with this hand knob on both sides and then you're going to be good to go. Like I said, this is going to mount to your roof rack. It's going to use a series of bolts and brackets. We have two rubber-coated brackets for each side of the carrier. You just tighten up the hand knobs right here. That's going to basically sandwich the crossbar between the bracket and the spacer up top under our carrier. Now this is going to fit a wide variety of crossbars. We have our arrow style bars right now, but it will also fit elliptical, round, square and more factory roof racks. When the carrier is empty, it's going to add about 4 1/4 inches to the top or your roof rack. That's something to keep in mind so if you want to travel with it empty on your roof, you have added that to the top of your roof. Keep that in mind for any low clearance situations.Well, thank you all for watching. That's going to do it for our test fit of the Thule Compass Stand Up paddleboard and Kayak Carrier on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I work in a high theft area. Is there a method to lock the Compass to the crossbar? 86509

There isn't a lock specifically designed for the Thule Compass # TH890000 , but what you could so is loop a standard cable lock around the carrier and crossbars to secure them into place. 68390
