How to Install the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Today on our 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, we're going to be installing the conscious prodigy P3 trailer brake controller. With this we'll be using to conscious plugin wiring adapter. This is a premium trailer brake controller. It's going to allow you to proportionally apply the brakes on your trailer depending on how quickly you're stopping here in the vehicle. It uses an inertia sensor inside so the harder you stop inside the inner sensor detects it and applies the brakes appropriately to match that on your trailer. Your output can be adjusted here on the left and you can select through various boost settings with the button on the top right.

The boost settings are for adjusting for the weight of your trailer. If your trailer is a little bit less than the weight in your vehicle, you'll want to use the boost one setting. If it's roughly the same weight as your vehicle, you use boost two and if your trailer weighs more than your vehicle, you'll want to use the boost three setting. That'll help make sure that the proportional braking is most appropriate for your setup. There is a setup menu using the button on the bottom right that will allow you to adjust the display output, the type of brakes on your trailer, whether it be electric brakes or electric over hydraulic, and some more information in the help setting. What I really like about this brake controller since you hold down the boost setting, it'll bring up a trailer selection menu where you can store up to five different specific settings for various trailers.

So, if you've got a smaller trailer you can set that to trailer one. If you've got a larger trailer you can set the settings up for that on trailer two. So it's all you have to do is when you hook up your trailer, just pick the appropriate profile for that trailer and hit the road. We'll begin our installation by plugging in or wiring it after. You'll need to access the fuse panel in the lower left kick panel on the driver's side. You need to release the lock tabs here on each side to pull your cover off.

I find doing the left side first a little bit easier because it's harder to get to, so you can get your screwdriver in there to release this tab and then it makes it easier to reach over and pull these tabs off. We can now plug our harness into the fuse box here. I'm going to plug it into this spot here, just above this large connector opening into the small one right there. And now we can route that wiring over where we, I think our brake controller, we can now reinstall our cover. The wiring can poke out the top with all the other wires, so we just tuck that back and then slide our cover back on.Now we want to mount our brake controller.

We'll start by mounting our bracket. We're going to be putting it in about this location. We'll use the screws that come with our kit, which will require a quarter inch socket to thread those into our lower qualified dash here. So we're going to go ahead and get our bracket about where we want it, and I like to center the screw in the slot on the bracket. So we've got movement back and forth if we needed it in the future. And also this will run right in. Once you've got one in, you can make sure that it's sitting fairly level and put your second screw in. We can now mount our controller in our bracket. We're going to use the machine screws that come in our kit to thread it into the bracket there. There's only two holes, one on each side, so we're going to line that up with the holes in our bracket, and we're going to start it on one side, and we'll start it on the other side. Then we'll tighten down the screws with a Phillips head screw driver. We can then bring our wiring over and plug in to the back of our controller. You can then use some zip ties to clean up your wiring. You can pick up some zip ties here at etrailer.com. With it all installed, we can now plug it into our trailer to test it out. You'll know it's working when you push the manual slider, and it shows that there's a trailer connected. So right now you can see it says no trailer connected, so we're going to go plug it in. And now we've got our trailer connected, you can see that we're displaying a voltage read out for how much voltage is going to our trailer brakes. And that completes our installation of the conscious prodigy P3 trailer brake controller on our 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
