How to Install the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller on a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500

Today on our 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 we're going to be installing Tekonsha's Primus IQ trailer brake controller. And with this we'll be using Tekonsha's plug-in wiring adapter. You can adjust the output voltage with the slider located here just to the left of the LCD display. Higher number is more power. Lower number is less. The button located on top allows you to change your boost settings, on/off and to one of the three boost modes.Boost one is for a trailer that is less than what your vehicle weighs.

Boost two is for a trailer that's roughly the same weight as your vehicle and boost three is when you're hauling a trailer that weighs more than what your vehicle weighs. This is a proportional brake controller so it's going to apply the brake harder on your trailer, the harder you're stopping up here. There's an internal inertia sensor that detects that movement inside to know when to apply the brakes harder or when to apply them softer. The boost setting plays in effect with that by taking that weight consideration into account to apply the brakes most appropriately. We'll begin our installation by plugging in our wiring adapter. You need to access the fuse panel in the lower left kick panel on the drivers side.

You'll need to release the lock heads here, on each side to pull your cover off. I find doing the left side first a little bit easier because it's harder to get to.So you can get your screwdriver in there to release this tab and that makes it easier to reach over and pull these tabs off. We can now plug our harness into the fuse box here. We're going to plug it into this spot here just above this large connector opening, into the small one right there. And now we can wrap that wiring over inaudible 00:02:06 our brake controller. We can now reinstall our cover.

The wiring can poke out the top with all of the other wires. So we just tuck that back and then slide our cover back on. Now we'll want to mount our brake controller. We'll start by mounting our bracket. We're going to be putting it in about this location.

We'll use the screws that come with our kit which will require a 1/4 inch socket to thread those into the lower part of our dash here.So we're going to go ahead and get our bracket about where we want it. I like to center the screw in the slot in the bracket so we've got movement back and forth if we need it in the future. Those will just run right in. Once you got one in you can make sure that it's sitting fairly level and put your second screw in. We can now mount up our brake controller so you'll see some small holes here on the side of your brake controller and this is where we're going to thread these in through the holes in our bracket here.So once you've got that lined up with the hole we'll use a 1/4 inch socket again. You can also use a flat-bladed screwdriver to thread this in. Now we can just set our angle and tighten it down. The only thing left now is to bring our wire over and plug it in. You can take some zip ties and clean this up if you'd like. You can pick up some zip ties here at eTrailer.com. Now we can hook it up to our trailer and test it out. You'll know you're connected because when you hit your manual slider here you'll see a number readout indicating that it's sending voltage back to your trailer brakes. If you didn't have it connected it would just display NC on the screen here. We have just a C for connected. And that completes our installation of Tekonsha's Primus IQ trailer brake controller on our 2016 GMC Sierra 1500.
